• Finally!!! Shift Delete = Forward Delete again!

  Summary

  I finally have my Shift Delete = Forward Delete back! KeyRemap4MacBook seems to be overkill for one simple function that should have been in ROM in the first place, but what the hey, maybe I'll develop a need for some of its other options. At any rate, I'm a happy camper!

  Pros

  Does exactly what I want. It also has many other capabilities that may be useful. After installation, see the preferences. Works with Lion & SL.

  Summary

  I do slide shows with iPhoto onto TVs. iPhoto uses left/right arrows to step through pictures. My Kensington remote transmits page up/down. I asked the author if the program could do that. They added that feature to the program and ONLY for iPhoto.

  Summary

  Upon completing installation and restarting my Mac, my Peer Guardian Alert software lit up like a Christmas Tree! It appears this KeyReMap program is wrapped in a malware/virus program that prioritizes sending info about your computer out over the internet before you even start to use it. I was really surprised to encounter such a fraud on Downloads.com. I immediately uninstalled the software. I was really hoping to use this software to customize my Logitech N305 wireless number pad, but so far, my search goes on.

  Pros

  This software gives you detailed keyboard customization abilities, but the only one I really needed was a forward-delete key that's tremendously useful when typing text. There are dozens of other options, too.

  Cons

  1. It overrode my low-delay, fast-repeat setting with its own repeat rate. 2. Eject key can't be remapped to forward-delete, but that's Apple's design not the software's fault.

  Summary

  I installed this for a single reason, the ability to get a forward-delete key that I'm accustomed to when using Windows. But the software has countless other options, including the ability to mix and match function keys (F1-F12) and their alternate functions (screen brightness, volume, etc.) It's also got a range of useful options for people who like vi, vim, or emacs editors; tweaked defaults for using specific software such as VMware; different keyboard layouts like Dvorak; and stuff I'd never thought of like combinations of trackpad and keystrokes. My instinct was to remap the eject key to forward delete, but unfortunately this is a bad option because of the way the Mac is set up: it can't register repeats with it, only single taps. Consequently I chose to remap the right option key, which I almost never use, to forward delete. Now I just have to reprogram my muscle memory to learn it. The software also lets you fine-tune key repeat rates. Unfortunately, though, its default settings overrode my own earlier ones (minimum delay before repeat, maximum repeat rate). I settled on an initial wait of 300ms and a key repeat rate of 43ns. I only changed the first two settings. I haven't explored the full range of what the software can do, but I recommend it. I'm considering changes to other ergonomically subpar keys such as caps lock and tilde, but that'll have to be for another day's exploration.

• Awesome-Forward Delete on my MacBook Pro

  Pros

  The thing that drove me crazy about Mac was the lack of a forward delete. I now have the forward delete on the exact opposite place of the backspace (Macs Delete). Logitech control center works better with it. Light and unobtrusive.

  Summary

  I tried read reviews and previously tried Double Click, but the options that software had did not satisfy how I wanted to customize a forward delete key to a single key. I have set the forward delete key to the single forward quote that I never use. Because it is exactly opposite of the backwards delete key on the keyboard (mirror image), it's in the perfect place. This software is also unobtrusive and does not interfere or slow down other functions or actions. The software designer will also customize the software to suite your needs that go beyond what is available in a very short time. As a lifetime PC user, not having a single key for forward delete was my top complaint with Macs. Now that I have it and shared it with all my other friends who use Macs, the also see the advantage and wonder why Apple has refused to address this for over a decade. This software also allows you to remap other keys if you wish. I prefer this over double click because the software has more efficient code, more versatile, has far greater and personal support . Double click also sometimes affected other applications that were slowed. I'm now very happy. Even my mouse improved.
