The Jump Force fighting manga counterpart is an arcade game based on some of the most popular manga series in Weekly Shōnen Jump.

When released in February 2019, Jump Force, developed by Spike Chunsoft and released by Bandai Namco Entertainment, combined action-packed combat with fan-favorite characters. Unlike other fighting games like Dragon Ball Fighter Z or Naruto Shippuden: Ultimate Ninja Storm 4, Jump Force is a crossover game that mixes characters from different series into one roster.

Jump Force’s gameplay draws from 3v3 tag-team battles, where the tip of a player’s fingers controls the main character at a time, and others are used as backups. It is not too complicated a combat system - light and heavy attacks, special moves, and abilities of every character. It’s easy to pick up, but the game will likely be slightly less technical than something like Tekken 7, in which precision and skill are the name of the game. Jump Force, however, is more than compensated for by its flashy visuals and accessibility for people willing to pick it up.

While the game includes a wide variety of manga characters, the selection might not feel as expansive as that of specialized games like One Piece: Pirate Warriors 4, which are more focused on developing a character roster within one universe than those focusing only on one franchise.

The realistic environments are juxtaposed with the anime-style characters for visually striking designs. Since the art direction of races tries to bridge the gap between manga and reality, I sometimes feel something gets lost in translation. For instance, Guilty Gear Strive keeps it consistent visually, resulting in something much cleaner.

Inspired by real-world locations and anime archetypes, the game's stages pay homage to those locales, and if you play, there’s quite a bit to fight. But on high-resolution TVs, the visuals won't feel dated compared to newer titles.

Jump Force has offline and online gameplay available. Both story-driven campaigns or multiplayer battles to test their skills, all in this gaming title for mobile players. However, as of August 2022, the online services have been discontinued, and the game can no longer play the vast majority if not all, online modes. Mortal Kombat 11 also has definite replayability for competitive players due to active online communities, unlike games like them.

Due to Jump Force for Windows’s delisting from digital storefronts, there’s no other way to obtain the game except through physical copies or secondary markets. That means it’s less available than other fighting games, like Street Fighter V.

Bottom Line

With the combination of this group of characters and such accessible gameplay, this is a great choice for Japanese fans of several different manga series. However, it isn’t as available and has stealthily discontinued online features that are likely to turn off players who want longevity. If you want authentic fighting, like Tekken 7 or Dragon Ball Fighter Z, it might give you a superior, well-rounded fighting experience compared to Marvel vs. Capcom 3.
