In Iron Lung, the developer strips away the comfort of sight, leaving you trapped in a rusted, windowless tin can. You are cast as a prisoner tasked with navigating a literal ocean of blood on a desolate moon, searching for resources in a universe where the stars have simply vanished.

Iron Lung is a game is a masterclass in minimalist horror, relying almost entirely on sound and the creeping dread of the unknown. It is a short, focused experience that prioritizes atmosphere over traditional action, making every creak of the hull feel like a potential death.

Terror of sensory deprivation

Iron Lung’s gameplay is intentionally clunky, forcing you to pilot the submarine using nothing but coordinates and a grainy, delayed camera. While this creates an incredible sense of immersion, the controls can feel frustratingly archaic for those used to modern responsiveness. You spend much of your time staring at a map and a proximity sensor, which might feel too repetitive or tedious for players seeking high-octane thrills.

As you pilot through the trench, the sound design does the heavy lifting. You’ll hear things bumping against the hull or distant, and organic shrieks. However, the visuals are intentionally muddy and low-resolution, which, while stylish, can occasionally make it difficult to distinguish between a significant landmark and a random rock. This lo-fi aesthetic is a bold choice, but it may alienate players who prefer more clarity in their horror.

Despite these hurdles, the tension is undeniable. This game feels like a coffin that hasn't quite closed yet, and the mechanical nature of the tasks, flipping switches and checking gauges, anchors you in the reality of your dire situation. The narrative is sparse, told through notes and environmental cues, but the central mystery of the Quiet Rapture provides a haunting backdrop that stays with you long after the credits roll.

  • Pros

    • Masterful use of atmospheric dread
    • Unique and haunting world-building
    • Exceptional sound design and music
    • Perfect length for a single sitting
  • Cons

    • Deliberately clunky and slow movement

Bottom Line

Memorable dive

Ultimately, Iron Lung is an essential play for fans of experimental horror who value mood over mechanics. It’s a brief, suffocating journey that proves you don't need jump scares to keep a player on edge; you just need to take away their eyes. Though it ends quickly, the final moments provide a chilling payoff that justifies the agonizing, slow-motion tension of the descent.
