There is something kind of magical about creating panoramic images. If all goes as planned, you take several separate photos and then use a piece of software to stitch them seamlessly into one. The best programs do this with little effort on the part of the user and return images that don't betray their piecemeal origins. Image Composite Editor is just such a program. It's easy enough for anyone to use, but the end result is better than we've seen from other, more complex programs.

Image Composite Editor has a plain, uncluttered interface, and creating a panorama is as simple as dragging and dropping your images onto the program. Users can choose between different styles of camera motion--rotating motion or different types of planar motion--each of which gives the panorama a different look. The program can crop the resulting panorama automatically, or users can do it manually. The panorama can be resized and saved in a variety of different file types, including JPEG, TIFF, Photoshop, BMP, and PNG. We do wish that the program came with a Help file, because beginners might not be familiar with all of the terminology used, such as the different types of camera motion. But even users with no previous experience should still be able to create some fairly good-looking results. We were particularly impressed that the program did such a good job of merging our images together with not even a hint of where the seams might be; we've used the same set of images to test other programs and did not get such good results. Overall, Image Composite Editor might not be the best choice for serious photo nerds who like to have a lot of control, but for everyone else, this program is a no-brainer.

Image Composite Editor installs and uninstalls without issues. We recommend this program to all users.

Great Program - Great Price (free) - Great Results

Pros
Blends pictures together seamlessly, with very little effort. Has various options for different results. Also has various file type outputs to serve various needs/wants. Automatic cropping High Quality output on finished product.
Cons
Not a lot of explanation to the different aspects of the program. But experiment with different results and choose what works best for you.
Summary
I tried many of the other 'free' programs but none of them gave me the outstanding, high quality results of this one. In fact, most pictures came out blurry and very low quality. With this one here you can actually zoom in on the finished product and everything is still crisp and clear. I used eight pictures of the San Diego skyline and it blended/stitched them together perfectly, there were no 'jaggies' (jagged edges) whatsoever. After saving my finished picture, I found a company on the web that will print out any size picture (depending on size) as a canvas print, which will be my excellent souvenir from America's Finest City (which by the way it is).

I have only given 4 stars because I have only used once to stitch a document that I had to scan in 2 parts. It was outstanding and very simple to use. Just select the 2 images and it does the rest. I haven't tried on photographs as yet so I can't comment on how it does for them

Pros
works very fast and in any direction; throw photos at it and it searches matches and stitches the photos together. Due to narrow stitch zone, there is a big tolerance for moving objects.

Sometimes it is OK but often there are many errors visible.
Summary
I try it first when I need panorama's. When it is not OK, I use another software that is much slower but sometimes better.
