Identity Finder Free Edition searches your computer for unsecured potentially sensitive information and brings it to your attention so you can take appropriate action. The items it identifies range from unsecured passwords to credit card numbers, and it offers you several different options for remedying each situation it finds.

Elimination options: Once the program has identified unsecured information on your computer, you can decide how you'd like to take care of it. For instance, you can just send it to the Recycling Bin, which is a good choice if you're not sure you want to permanently delete it yet. Alternately, if you know you do want to eliminate the information permanently, you can use the Shredder feature, which makes it completely unrecoverable.

Results Wizard: Especially if you don't have a lot of experience working with this type of program the Results Wizard is a big help. It displays the findings of scans to you and guides you through the process of addressing each individual issue to ensure the security of your information.

Overwhelming interface: There is a lot going on in this program's interface, and it can be a bit overwhelming, especially to inexperienced users. Once you get the hang of it, most processes are relatively intuitive, but it's hard to know where to start at first. There are also a lot of inactive buttons in this version because the developers are trying to entice you to purchase one of their paid programs.

No support: The free version of this product does not come with support. That means that if you run into trouble, you're pretty much on your own. There is a Help document, but the link to it is somewhat hidden under the Configuration tab, so its very easy to miss if you don't know it's there.

Bottom Line

Identity Finder Free Edition is a good basic tool for finding and eliminating unsecured personal information. Its interface can take some getting used to, especially for new users, but it performs its stated functions well, and it gives you some good options for getting rid of problems. Since it's free, it's worth checking out to see if it will work for you.
