This small program saves and restores the current locations of your desktop icons, but that's all it offers. IconSort resides in the system tray. From the tray icon's context menu, you can save the current desktop layout. If the desktop icons have been moved for any reason, select the restore option to revert back to the original positions. Additionally, the program allows you to save multiple layouts to your hard drive and restore any one you'd like.
Users who organize their desktop icons by moving a group or types of icons into different locations are the ones who will find this application beneficial. If you often encounter desktop icon rearrangement problems, then you should consider this freeware as an option.
What’s new in version 1.04
Version 1.04 has unicode support, language file can be updated now from the program itself, added a message box that shows that you need administrator privileges to install/uninstall the program, multi user support for the main program and the installer, settings and language files are now saved in Windows user's settings folder, minor bug fixes, minor languages fixes, bug involving icon's name with multiple white spaces resolved, more languages added. Runs only on Windows 32-bit.
I do an RDP to my desktop at work and because of resolution Laptop to desktop it always screws up my desptop icons. I can get it right in less than a second with this app.

Summary
I tried a lot of similar programs before finally finding this one.
The option of being able to keep your desktop icons the way you like them is something every PC user likes to do. Many programs claim to be able to do this for you, save the positions and then restore them again for you.
The most commonly mentioned is in the graphics card utility, ATT Ati Tray Tools,. It has as an added extra, the ability to do just that.
Except that, like so many other similar programs I tried, it fails a lot.
For some reason I can't work out, ATT and others will happily save your desktop icons positions for you, and then say...you play a game or something that causes the screen resolution to go a different size and then, when you return the desktop to it's usual resolution all the icons are in the wrong places..so I would go into ATT and select to restore the icons. They would not restore, everything would stay the same!
Also a lot of the other programs I tried would have a problem if the PC had crashed, then upon rebooting and returning to windows, restoring the icons would do nothing.
Well this program has it sussed!
It ALWAYS without fail restores the icons to what they were saved at.
The fact you can even do a 'save to..' and save the icons restore file to anywhere you like is a great backup if you are that worried about it! In general use though it is brilliant...one click on the save icon and it does it all silently, no program appears, no system tray icon or program running, it simply saves the icon positions to a file and then auto closes itself without you seeing a thing. Restoring is the same, you have another icon on the desktop for restore and it does it silently too. Brilliant.
I mean, a whole program GUI like a lot of these programs have, is not required so the author got this so right when he decided to go with a quick auto save silent idea.
I love it!
You can of course go into the settings and change some options, you can even have the system tray icon and program running all the time if you would like, no point really though.
I have this with the 'Save' icon on my desktop where I just click it whenever I remember! I then dragged the 'restore Icons' icon to my quicklaunch bar so that I can go into it if I need to restore them. That way I don't need to have both the SAVE and RESTORE icons on my desktop. (I am a bit obsessive about what I have on the desktop as I usually have far too many icons on there at all times!!)
To sum up - Don't waste any more time trying out other software that claims to save and restore yer icons mate, this is the only one you'll ever need!
Brilliant little utility.
All users need to improve his productivity!!
