• Excellent icon utility program

  Pros

  Advanced editing features. Can create icon libraries (*.ico) which for me was very important. Small footprint and with all the complexity, it seems to be very light on resources and space it takes. No 'bloat-ware' included in the installation (downloaded from the company's website).

  Cons

  If you don't have much experience with image editing software. it could be intimidating at first. But there is a 'splash screen' that opens when you run the program which helps a lot as it gives you short cuts to the most common actions.

  Summary

  After reading the above review I was a bit concerned, but I still looked into it. First I downloaded the software from the company's website, and I didn't see any nefarious Terms and Conditions, no viruses and none of the PUP included with other free-ware software downloads. Also, I noticed that the payment can be made through PayPall which adds a layer of security and that is good enough for me. I had a couple questions regarding the compatibility with Win-10 and the difference between the standard and portable installation. I sent an e-mail to office@icofx.ro and to my surprise I received the answer in a few hours. The program itself seems to have everything I wanted and some more. The window layout is pretty much standard, so if you have used any image editing software you should be already pretty familiar with the controls, where they are and what they do. See the notes I made in the "Pros" section for other details. Another nice touch is that from the Help menu you can access directly a Forum (so another way to communicate with the programmers directly) and a link to Tutorials. Considering the limited (good) options available from the free programs, and the high price of those that are 'established' names, I think IcoFX fits nicely in between with a reasonable price, specially for home users. Heck... even I can afford it. :-)

• A free trial for spyware/malware?!?

  I did not even install the software. I stopped after I read their Privacy Policy!!!

  Cons

  READ THEIR PRIVACY POLICY CAREFULLY! It was the part about "our software will be collecting your personal information from your computer" and "do not attempt to use a malware detection routine on this software" that alarmed me. The company is located in Europe. How would the authorities prosecute them if they did something underhanded? What do they want with my personal information anyway? I'll pay for something off the shelf at Best Buy b/c this product is NOT worth it! And it's NOT free. I think that's their strategy to get it installed on as many machines as possible.

I guess that is their verson of freeware huh. too many other good programs like paint.com and gimp that will do the same thing and don't disable anything. rather support them. its gone down the stray electron sewer. flushhhhhhhh.

  Pros

  * Quite easy to use (standard photo editing). * Allows you to make beautiful icons and cursors (fixed or animated). * Fun and Creative.

  Cons

  Haven't seen any. I had a tiny bit of trouble at first when I tried to make just one icon and use it. For some reason, when I made a single 256x256 icon the icon had a lot of extra space, and the image was small with a huge border. When I instead made the "recommended" set of icons, it worked like a charm. Dunno why.

  Summary

  I have totally reorganized my desktop thanks to IcoFX and it is gorgeous. I now have every icon on my desktop in a folder which has been personalized with pictures. For example, the "My Computer" icon now has a picture of my real computer with my real desktop pasted inside the icon. My "Recycle Bin" is a wastebasket with a bright and beautiful pattern. And I have my hunky German Shepherd, Storm, as an icon for interesting sites about pets. I like to think about some purchases before I make them, so I have an American Express Card image as my Things to Buy (maybe) icon. The possibilities are endless and I am already thinking of others! I also personalized my cursor, so rather than a little white arrow, it's now a sinewy, highly-visible lime green hand-drawn arrow. I have an animated question-mark cursor with my arrow and a colorful question mark that fades in and out. I have used Photoshop Elements to create some of the images or to cut them down (ie, remove the background from an image). It is a wonderful program. I like National Geographic for wallpaper - they have many images available for download. This is a wonderful and fun tool for creating and editing icons and cursors that gets very easy to use as you learn the interface and what it is capable of. It can be used for Macintosh or PC - although my experience is on the PC. At the current time, it is available for a month of use free, but I will buy it even if I quit using it - I already got my $45 worth. And I like to support people that have made a nice product. I am now so proud of my desktop, I almost hate to clutter it up with open windows!

  A solid tool for creating,and editing icons.The interface is simple,yet powerfull enough to satisfy most. Brought to us free of charge by IconFX.

  None as far as i can see.

  Summary

  I was able to convert some of my pictures to icons in minutes...a 'crop' tool is included as well. Creating icons from scratch is straight forward with a color chooser,a toolbar similar to 'mspaint',a zoomed window to paint on,and has an 'actuall size' preview box to watch your progress. The program does exactly what it claims.My icon utility search is over.
