Count frequencies of words and phrases in a single file and in multiple files.

This software scans one or more docx, text or text-like files (e.g. HTML and XML files) and counts the number of occurrences of the different words or phrases (pattern matching can be used). There is no limit on the size of an input text file. The words/phrases which are found can be displayed alphabetically or by frequency. The program can be told to allow or disallow words with numerals, hyphens, apostrophes, underscores or colons, to ignore words which are short or which occur infrequently, and to ignore words (e.g., common words such as 'the') contained in a specified file. It can also be told to count only words or phrases in a specified list. Results can be written to an output file, and that file can be read into a spreadsheet program such as Excel. This program can automatically create an Excel-readable file of words/phrases vs files. It may be applied to text in French, German, Italian, Spanish and other European languages. The program supports the use of regular expressions for specifying words/phrases to count.

The Swiss Army Knife of text analysis

Pros
Excellent tool to count words and phrases in a file or a folder. Works perfectly and is updated regularly by a skilled developer. Many, many options to tweak your results the way you want.
Cons
None. Everything works as expected, no surprises. I have been using this software for several years, and it's never crashed on me. I've had a few requests and have emailed the developer directly, and he's implemented most of them! Some reviews have mentioned the interface; I don't see a single thing wrong with it--it doesn't have any Geocities animated GIFs, but I like that. See the screenshot in the description above to see what one of the pages of the interface looks like. I do wish, though, that it could load huge lists of words to ignore (50,000 words or more) a bit faster, but they need to be loaded only once (when you open the software), and after that, you're done.
Summary
I develop curricula for a learning center in San Francisco. To develop our materials, I need to analyze vast numbers of texts including textbooks and book-length works of literature. I use Word Frequency Counter Advanced to generate lists of words that appear in each book or chapter of a book. For example, we have used WFCA To generate vocabulary lists for such books as "Nineteen Eighty-Four", "The Jungle", "The Great Gatsby", and many more. The software also allows us to display information in various ways, including words only, words with number of times it appears, words in alphabetical order, words ranked by frequency, etc.

I have been using WFCA as technical translator for 7 years now. Initially by counting the most frequent original words and "brute force" replacing them with translated words. After I started using a Translation Memory program, WFCA was less needed. But recently the developer added a really useful Count All Phrases function (all updates are free with the perpetual license at less than 60 USD), It quickly identifies phrases of 3 to 6 words occurring at least 3 times (default parameters, easily changed). These phrases plus their translation can be added to the "Term Base" of the Translation Memory program; the translation will then be suggested when they appear in the original document. Installing the software (under Windows XP, Windows 7 32 and 64 bit) is straightforward.

It counts words. You can do this online for free.
Cons
Difficult layout and ugly interface. Doesn't work with foreign characters (breaks up the words, giving an inaccurate count).
Summary
For a paid program, I'd go elsewhere.

Loading was horrible. Both times it locked up my computer (laptop running Win XP, w/lots of mem and space). Finally it loaded. But when I tried to run the program, my computer again locked up.
Summary
I just tried to open it, but my 5 (calendar) days of trial expired. So did my patience with this program. Let me know when you have a reliable program and I might try it again. I really needed to use it, but not when it wasted 3 hours of my time. A free trial should especially work right so the user will really want to buy it.
