Editors’ Review
Grand Theft Auto III is one of the most successful video games ever released, making its re-release on the App Store a chance for millions to play a game they might have missed a decade ago. The results are very good, with a few small issues related to screen size and the original game design.
Grand Theft Auto III was originally released on a DVD for the Playstation 2, so it is a big game and may take some time to download to your device. After it has, though, it loads quickly and plays smoothly, especially on the newest iOS devices. While it has received an iPhone 5 upgrade to use the full screen, it still suffers from control issues, mostly because of its previously wonky combat mechanics being mapped to the virtual joystick so often used in ported games on iOS. As a result, the game is a joy to play in open-world mode, but can be immensely frustrating, bordering on impossible to play when in combat situations or major battles. Nonetheless, the entire game is present, and if you enjoyed it during its original release, you will here.
While Grand Theft Auto III plays best on a new iPad, for performance and space issues, it is a solid game for any iOS device and a reminder of why it was such a successful game when first released so many years ago. If you are eager to experience the game that started the era of open-world exploration, Grand Theft Auto III is one to download.
