When is your Android phone more than a phone? When you turn it into a combination keyboard and mouse to control your computer. After installing a free Gmote server app for Windows, Mac, or Linux, Gmote creates an ad-hoc Wi-Fi connection with your computer--unfortunately, if you don't use Wi-Fi, you're stuck. The on-screen controls can stream music from your computer, launch movies from afar, navigate the Web, and control a presentation. It's not as powerful or sophisticated as some apps we've seen for iPhone, but it does the trick, and without charging a dime. Unless you opt for the $2.99 donation version. App developers like to eat, too.

Pros
Easy to use. Adaptive. On phone. Simple.

Can't scroll. Does not remember info. Wait time. Ugly.
Summary
I use this everyday to seamlessly navigate from cable to computer and operate four separate computers within the same network then do the same at the store. We use Boxee quite a bit and the one tiny hangup is the inability to scroll through some of the Boxee menus. It would be nice to have a visible wheel on the screen to scroll other than that this is my third most used bit of amazing software.
Great app for android a must have.

The BEST application for anybody who likes to use android to the fullest. I typed this using it.

Pros
+ does what it says: browse and play all your media straight from your phone + easy to use through the wireless LAN + Wi-Fi communication means Gmote can be used from anywhere in your router's range
Cons
- requires installing the server side of the program in your computer, which of course must be running for Gmote to work. - uses it's own "method" of playing media files (through JAVA)
Summary
Although the idea is fantastic and the software itself does works, the end result is definitely not what i expect. If you're for a way to interact with your software as if your phone was an actual remote, then you might be disappointed. Gmote works by running your audio and video files though java applications. This means the performance will be limited by java multimedia capabilities. Playing mp3 files was done in the background, and although I didn't test it for long, quality seemed good to me. Playing video files on the other hand was quite different. Video is player through Gmote's java player, and quality is very disappointing compared to what other video players i'm used to (MPC, VLC, WMP) can manage, which is a major drawback. Bottom-line: while Gmote is quite a useful solution for easy multimedia access from your phone, it's still not comparable to usual remotes in the way it interacts with your files. Take it for what it is, you may enjoy it.
