Genie Timeline Free is designed to back up the stuff you want it to save and make it easy to retrieve it. It archives desktop files and folders, My Documents, e-mail, bookmarks, videos, music, pictures, Office files, and financial files. It's intended to be a set-and-forget solution for safeguarding your system. However, the freeware disables the critical Disaster Recovery feature that lets you recover your system after a disk failure or formatting. BlackBerry and iPhone/iPad/iPod also require a paid upgrade.

During its installation process, Genie Timeline asked for our full name and e-mail address, stating plainly that it was required for installation, regardless of our Internet address. That raised flags. Nevertheless, we proceeded with the first step, selecting a drive for our backup archive. This should be a drive other than your C drive, either a separate drive on your disk or, much better, a separate hard drive (best of all is an external hard drive). We selected our dedicated backup drive and moved on to the Select Data page. Here we could choose what we wanted Genie to back up. While the program claims we could select individual files and folders to back up, it only let us include or exclude the default categories. Genie also placed a No-Backup Zone folder on our desktop for items we didn't want to back up. The program calculated our backup size and parameters, and we clicked Finish. Clicking the program's system tray icon let us monitor the backup's progress. We could also open the program's main view, the Dashboard, as well as pause our backup and perform other tasks from the system tray. The free backups aren't encrypted or compressed, which makes data recovery easy but requires a lot of disk space.

You should never scrimp on backups. If you're looking for a free backup tool that can recover disks and partitions from catastrophe, we recommend looking elsewhere. But if you try Genie Timeline Free and like its ease of use, you have the paid upgrade option, which is comparable to other premium backups. Whatever tool you choose, complete and regular backups are absolutely essential.

Simple to use, ! I have it set to backup to a USB drive, it takes copies of the files behind your back. I have went back to retrieve last week's copy !..
Cons
Can take some resources on the machine when backing up large files.
Summary
This is a must have on any machines and every machines. It takes snaps shoots of the files as they are saved. with the ability to control the life in days or disk space, you can have several older copies of the same file to return to. It is a SVC server working for you 24/7.

Summary
Installed, nothing happened. Could pull up the restore menu, but no way to set/start/do backup. My guess is Windows Firewall (outbound firewall enabled) blocked it, but if a program can't at least partially run without being connected to the internet it's crap (Minimal function is at least enough to ask for permission to connect). It's not that I'm one of the unlucky on metered or throttled internet, but regardless I hate programs that just assume it's OK to connect - for all the increasing bandwidth we get these days software companies seem to assume this means they can use it up and just forget about privacy.
A P.O.S. - Simply doesn't work.

The software gives the user the impression that it is actually backing up your important files.
Cons
The software doesn't actually backup all of your important files. It skips or misses, seemingly randomly, files under directories that are supposedly part of the Genie backup. This was a complete waste of money.

Pros
- it will allow you to select a Network drive as your backup location (in fact any drive it can see), which other programs won't. - simple interface that simplifies the process of setting backups. - can automate your backups.
Cons
- if you use the 'smart types' it seems to want to backup ALL of those files, regardless of whether you selected a specific location to backup or not. - if you select a pre-existing location to save your backup's it forces you to add a sub-directory. If you want to mirror directories like I do, this pretty much makes it impossible.
Summary
Better than no backup at all, and it's free - but I couldn't find a way to 'mirror' my directory structure without adding in a stupid sub-folder - so it wasn't for me.

- A lot of bugs - Program crashes constantly - Once they release a new version you get no more support to the ond version. If you need to reinstall or if you get a bug (which is common) you are in trouble - As a consequence of item above, they keep forcing you to upgrade and offer you a discount to that (I don't want to upgrade, I just want the version I've paid for working fine)

Nice UI. Installation was quick.
Cons
You must upgrade to remove the checkmarks. After uninstall and deleting all registry keys found from "genie," checkmarks still appear over any files I had backed up. Also, a genie "backup" tab still appears in any file's properties, even though the software is no longer installed. Now, I emailed support and have wasted 2 hours of my life with this free software.

Don't install, there are other options.

- The idea is great - The previous versions worked great - You have another option!
Cons
- Genie as a company is completely retarded - When I attempted to PURCHASE the software they asked me to scan and submit them my PASSPORT, DRIVERS LICENSE, BILLS and all this other private documentation meanwhile I was paying via PAYPAL! - Any company who chooses to fill the void left for sound, block level backup will make a killing because Genie are not the guys.

Pros
You can select folders and exclude anything from same. It backs up very fast. Use turbo mode for the first time, then switch to standard after. The program looks for and makes changes every 8 hours, or you can click manual any time. Restore function is like system restore for files. You can choose to restore a file from various dates.
Cons
Free version only backs up personal files/folders, and not system. Have to upgrade(pay) for that feature. A couple of times it stopped working, and I had to restart the program, but it worked fine after that.
Summary
I use it as a secondary program for backing up personal files/folders. I use Mac Reflect for system image backup. Genie is good for retrieving a file or folder you may need to get in a hurry.
Attractive intuitive reliable improved. Almost perfect.

Pros
It DOES perform a timeline backup. Backup DOES work without much disturbance. It's concept allows for simplicity and user friendliness. Genie provides good end-user support. Nice user interface.
Cons
It is a very dangerous tool. It does not a good job, due to the following reasons: - When you have multiple users on the same PC, it will only perform a backup of the files of the user the backup is installed for. - Intelligent backup is dangerous. It will only backup the files with the extensions you request. The list of extensions is not complete. - As a result, it consumes your backup drive space with files you don't want. Intelligent backup works for ALL your connected drives, even the xTB drives which you don't want to have included. - There is an 'exclude from backup' function in the tool, but it is hidden, not user friendly. - Recover sometimes fails for a number of files without reason. The tool crashes when recovering, and you have to restart. - The "system recovery" option does not do a good job, and it is VERY SLOW. - Files are spread out over the backup library between the "intelligent backup", and the "selective backup". Confusing

I am a registered user for 2 years, and have purchased 3 licenses. I would advise to consider very well the cons when doing a backup.<br /><br /><span class='notifyMsg'> Updated </span>on May 3, 2012<p/>On top of what i wrote, there is another con, the tool does not recognize file renames, which results in the loss of versions of files that you rename!
