• Does the job well, easy to use, responsive support.

  Supports both Windows and *nix servers. Compare current and past versions of files. Supports file permissions and symlinks on *nix servers. Many understandable options and settings.

  Cons

  On a *nix server in a directory with lots of symlinked files, it is slow to show the directory listing. In general, in showing the remote directory listings, it isn't as fast as a good ftp client, but it is looking at file status also, so understood.

  Summary

  When I first tried FtpVC it didn't differentiate between regular and symlinked files on *nix servers. And you obviously couldn't tell it to not show symlinks in the directory listings. Also, it uploaded all files with 644 permissions, which is bad for cgi files. When I pointed these things out to them, they made necessary changes and additions to the program to cover the issues. Their quick response and the fact that they even id it really impressed me. When you change to a different directory it isn't real fast in showing the listing, especially if there are a lot of symlinks. But, since it is checking the status of each files this is understandable. When reading about version control programs such as git and Subversion, I got lost many times. Not so with FtpVC. It is easy to use and understand. It doesn't have all the options of git, such as merging files and branches. But, unless you really need that, this is a great product. You can easily view the differences between your local version of a file and the version on the server, with their other great product, ExamDiff. The free version of ExamDiff is included in FtpVC. However, you can tell it to use whatever comparison program you want. You can also tell it what program to use to edit a file.

• Perfect solution for teams without a dedicated server

  Most CVS/SCM software require to be installed on some server, where they manage a database with the history of the source code. But what about those smaller teams who can't share a company network, and at the same time don't have the money or reason enough to pay for a dedicated server on the internet where they eventually could install a CVS service? Well, with FtpVC all you need is a simple web hosting account with FTP access, and you still get all the functions you need to keep the code organized, while a team updates source or binary files. The software integrates directly with ExamDiff (their own file comparison solution) but you may use any other software as well (like Merge), as you have full control over the command line to call the external tool you may prefer. The company's support is fast and helpful, should you need ever them. A cosmetic bug I spotted was eliminated in less than a day and the software works just flawless.

  Ease of use, ease of implementation, intuitive UI, prompt tech support. Has really helped our decentralized team of 3 developers.

  Not as feature rich as $2000 PerForce but an unbeatable value for the $50 license fee.

  Pros

  We are a team of three italian students at University of Udine - Italy. We are developing our software engineering class project with FtpVC. We are positively surprised by its ease of use and its power. Version control with this program is a bliss, and the customer support is simply great. Definitely a great version control tool.

  FtpVC is an easy to use program that effectively provides source control for individuals and workgroups. It has all the functionality I need for my small web development business. The support has also been responsive and helpful.

  I found FtpVC very intuitive and simple to setup and use, and am very pleased with how this application is based on an FTP browser, which is one reason I find it so intuitive. Although there is no phone number, the support is very good, especially the online forum. Also the cost is very reasonable considering all you get, namely REMOTE version control access using your host as the central server...
