Freeplane is a versatile program for creating mind maps and other diagrams to help you express your ideas and share them with colleagues. All features are clearly accessible through the app's intuitive interface, meaning that even inexperienced users can use the program with ease.

Pros

Password protection: This program gives you the option of entering a password to protect your files. In many cases, you may feel there is no need to take a precaution like this, but it's always a nice option to have.

Tabbed interface: You can have multiple mind maps open at once when you're using this program. Moving between them is quite easy as well, because each page is represented by a labeled tab running across the bottom of the interface.

Searchable node lists: Mind maps can get pretty large and unwieldy at times, which can make it hard to find exactly the information you're looking for. That's why the search feature in this program is so nice. It presents all of the nodes of your current map in a searchable list, and there are even filters you can enable to make finding what you want even easier.

Cons

Help format: The Help document that comes with this program is in the form of a mind map. While this is a nice way to display the features of the program, it's not necessarily the easiest way for everyone to navigate and absorb information. This is especially true in the case of users who have no experience with this type of program and who need the Help file the most.

Bottom Line

Freeplane is an efficient free program that gives you the tools to outline your ideas in whatever way you see fit. It offers a lot of nice features, and it ran smoothly all during testing.

Free. Fast. Flexible. Fun. Customizable. Robust. Holds lots of data but is easy to search and filter. Stable - has never crashed. See relationships with connectors, colors, icons, summary nodes. Hold extra information in notes, node details, attributes -- visibility of all can be toggled. Advanced scripting lets you do amazing things (check https://goo.gl/rECw0t). Active development and user community. Great for notetaking, planning, sermon prep, Bible study, daily dashboard, writing. Mostly text based - fast text entry and manipulation. Use keyboard and/or mouse with ease.

Mostly text based - modest support for graphics.

I couldn't do without Freeplane. I highly recommend it.

Pros
Lots of space to create the MM's. Several Icons to use to indicate what each segment/node is and represents. Compatible with Win 8 & 8.1. It is much simpler to use than the leading software.
Cons
Takes a bit of time to get used to.
Summary
Please ignore the other reviewers - it's standard for CNet to make 'offers' when downloading software (that's how they try to make their money) and all you need to do is 'Decline' or choose Custom/Advanced installation to not get these offers. IT IS NOT FREEPLANES MAKING. I do not work for them, it's just a great MM software and the other reviews do not does it justice or is fair to FreePlane. It is very good.

Pros
The program is very deep with features. It runs very fast and efficiently. The file size is small. It compares very favorable with the other mindmap programs in almost every respect. It is superior in several respects. There is no reason to purchase a mindmap program for hundreds of dollars when this is a really good even superior alternative.
Cons
The learning curve is a little steeper probably than the alternatives, but it is not bad. Once the features are learned they are very easy and efficiently invoked. The only thing missing of significance is file attachments. However, I have grown to believe that file attachments generally are not a good idea. It is better to keep files elsewhere and use some type of linking. File attachments just make mindmap file sizes too big. Besides, it is better to have the files in the normal file structure (or a file archiving system such as EverNote) so the files can be used more easily including for example by file indexing programs such as DTSearch. I have put most files in Evernote and it is very easy to create a link to the file in Evernote (there are several effective ways to do this).
Summary
This program can literally bs used to map one's mind. All one's thoughts and information can be organized within it. I highly recommend it, and I hope they keep improving it.

Installed on my Windows XP, but would not run. This is only one of many bugs and problems posted on the software site. May be a good program, but how can one tell if it doesn't run?

I use the alpha preview version (very stable) easy styling options, formula system that allow Excel-like spreadsheet capabilities, powerful filtering system, added flexibility by using groovy scripts, and more ! Development team looks very active.
Cons
not many cons : - I would like to see more flexibility in the positioning of nodes. - Probably will need a way to collaborate on maps in the near future. - documentation might be more complete, notably for scripts

Looks so powerful that I intend to use this tool for project management, training, and GTD implementation.
