FreeExtractor creates self-extracting archives for Windows from existing ZIP files. It is an open-source solution for packaging software programs and distributing files to friends and colleagues over the Internet. It features a Windows 2000-style wizard-based user interface. Authors have fine-grained control over archive settings and can tailor their self-extractors to suit their applications. Authors can specify such options as an embedded URL, introduction text, shortcut creation, and a custom icon.
there is a "back" button on the very first window which causes application to crash if user clicks twice on it... there is no point to have "back" button on a first window. It should be grayed out.
Summary
I would give 5 star if the issue would be resolved.
Awesome! But don't like that initial screen.

Pros
This program works great and does exactly what it describes. It gives you lots of options, lets you extract to the system temp folder (hint: use "%TEMP%\mydirectory"), even lets you execute a file when extraction is finished, AND even clean up after itself, AND lets you pick your own icon for the extractor!
Cons
The ONLY thing I don't like (and why I'm giving 4 instead of 5 stars) is it doesn't give you an option to disable the initial screen, which kind of detracts from the nice experience it provides otherwise. You can at least provide your own title and message, but you can't pick your own image... though you could probably hack it. ;)

no it hasn't, what's wrong with you?

Pros
really simple do use; does almost everything you could want; free and open source
Cons
the option to delete extracted files after running an extracted program doesn't work. if you want to make comments to be read by the author, go look up freeextractor on sourceforge.
Summary
This program has a lousy interface.

Summary
ok...I downloaded the program, and installed it...now, I try to run the free extractor wizard, I had to drag and drop the zip file onto it,a nd there is no option to browse your computer for the file...after that I was greeted with a screen asking for a lot of information...at that point I just closed the program and did not bother to continue. I am used to shareware programs that just open a list of files in the archive and unzip with one or two mouse clicks, and this program requires more actions by the user just to unzip one file, and to uninstall it I had to manually delete it because there was no uninstall file.
Oh my Gosh - This is EXCELLENT!

So easy to use and you don't need to do anything complicated.
It works fine and its just what I was looking for!
If only there were some new features such as insert splash screen and other options this would be perfect!
This is just awesome!
Simply great!

Summary
All I wanted was to create a self-extracting file that would un-pack files, launch a file, and create a shortcut -- all without being warned in the beginning that "this is an un-licensed copy of blah, blah, blah...!!!" All the features I wanted and it's free -- perfect!
Nice program, but watch out!

Worked extremely well until I tried to create large archives. When extracting an archive greater than 600 megs, FreeExtractor complains about corrupt data. WinZip Self-Extractor worked fine with the same archive!
Great Program!

Summary
This is exactly what I've been looking for. The Package and Deployment Wizard is good, but doesn't allow for single executable deployment. I was dreading having to go the over-complicated MSI route, or purchasing expensive setup software. PKZip can do something similar (automatically run an executable after extracting it), but it's still very obvious that it's a PKZip archive (prompts for extract location and such). Free Extractor essentially inserts itself as 'step 0' of your installation wizard What would make this near-perfect utility even better would be an option to skip the FreeExtractor window entirely: extract my setup files into a temp folder, run the setup.exe, then delete the setup files - all without any user interaction. Ooh baby!
Excellent free software!

I needed to distribute an update of a software and distribute to more than 300 users and did it successfully with Free Extractor! and in just a few minutes. Download it now! It works ok in Win NT/2000/XP.
