  Pros

  Version FreeVideoEditor_1.4.51.712_d was good, you could cut out video pieces, save the remaining video in the exact same format, no long conversion process required. But now that is not the case.

  Cons

  At the end of 2016, they released an update, breaking the old version so it no longer worked, and then when you went to get the new version, you are forced to get their Studio Product. Contained within is the Free Video Editor, but it is inferior unless you pay. The new version does the same editing, but they removed the fast/same 'save' function to the same quality it was before, to now forcing you to select a conversion format, many to choose from, all not as good as the original, and all taking the amount of time the video is. So an hour video edit takes an hour to convert and save to a format you don't want, instead of the way it was, where the video was saved in the same format, no conversion process, in a minute or two. I saw their upgrade Premium Membership, it is not expensive, but no where does it say that they restore the previous no-conversion required process.

  Summary

  Their support forums are dead, 3 topics, 2 years ago. I would gladly pay for the previous version with loss-less edit saves w/o conversions, but it's not available, or they are not advertising it that way on their website. It's a key feature, and it is not listed.

  Something is wrong, and I suspect it works on some computers or OSs and not others. :( I used it on a Window XP. I can hear the video playing, but nothing is displayed or more accurately, some portion of the screen background image is stuck on it's display.

• "Original format" is back, but bundled with OpenCandy

  Pros

  Genius for quick and easy editing, especially because it can save videos quickly in the original format. This was the key feature in previous versions, because it leaves the video along instead of forcing you to mess with the format. Because of their OpenCandy malware install, I still use the 1.4.12 version, which is fast, simple, and can save in the original format. The new version "may" also be able to save in original format, but because of the OpenCandy malware, it may not be worth the test.

  Cons

  The installer is bundled with OpenCandy. This is not exactly a virus, but it changes your system and installs unwanted software. Makeuseof has a good article on OpenCandy: http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/didnt-install-opencandy-explained/ OpenCandy is not hidden during the install, so if you're not sure if this is for real, watch the first page of the install menu for the "OpenCandy EULA", which is automatically agreed to if you install the program (i.e. you can't opt out of the OpenCandy). I had this installed once before from another program and it created about 4 hours of frustrated unistall effort. Malwarebytes have instructions for removing the program once it's installed, but oh my gosh, if I have to install a third-party anti-malware program and go through four different scans, then forget it!

  Summary

  I'm a little sad I found the OpenCandy malware, because I would almost accept it for an updated version of this software. But it's a troubling trade-off to get a useful piece of software (Free Video Editor) at the price of getting a malicious piece of software (OpenCandy). Everyone should know that that's the price, and some people might find that's worth it. I don't, because I don't accept anyone selling my computer to advertisers. Still too greedy, DVDVideoSoft: make your software really free or change the name.

• Version 1.4.13 ruins the software

  Pros

  Incredibly simple and fast. Perfect for casual users who just want to quickly crop a video without messing it up. Versions 1.4.12 and before had the best function of cutting directly to the original format without changing anything, which should be standard on all video clippers. Too bad the new version loses this critical feature.

  Cons

  Taking away the ability to keep the original format in the latest version turns this editor from my favorite into just another trashy piece of freeware. So this means that if you have a movie that you're happy with but you just want to cut it down to one scene, this software forces you to convert it into another format when you cut it. WHY? Without the original format feature there is nothing stand out about this software and no reason to use it rather than any competitor. DVDVideoSoft really showed their greedy side taking this feature away for no reason, and I think they've killed the software.

  Summary

  With the "original format" feature, this software was my favorite go-to solution for quick and true editing. Without the original format, there's no reason to use it. DVDVideoSoft has shown their greedy side: Get people to use something useful for free, then start charging them for it.

• MALWARE FROM HELL!!!

  If you like spending time chasing down and eliminating malware this software is for you! I knew before installing I would need to unclick all "promotions" but that wasn't good enough. With the video editor it doesn't show the 3rd party BS they are going to put on your hard drive, it just tells you by clicking next you agree to TOS. There are too many other good free video editors to go through the hassle this software company puts you through.

• Almost perfect for helmet cam video trimming

  Pros

  Finally I found possibly the quickest way to cut my helmet camera videos. Files I cut are about 2GB large .mov videos and they are loading almost instantly in the editor and I can cut a piece of a footage I need and save in the original format again almost instantly. Very impressed!

  Cons

  - close current file functionality is really needed. When I finished trimming my video I want to delete original one but unable to do it as the program is using it. So I have to close the program and then delete the file - annoying. - when zooming in (for smoother quick hand scrolling of a large footage) and current position pointer got to the right side of the window there is a button above it to slide the window but for some reason it moves the pointer as well which is not expected behavior and I have to go back a look where I left.

  Summary

  Very impressed with this piece of software and I'm using it almost every day. But you have to watch out when installing it and opt out from any unwanted software installation (choose Advanced, not Automatic install option!). Few minor issues but still the best I've seen so far.

• Fit My Needs

  Easy to use. Once you use it a couple of times, it is a no-brainer. Keeps original format by default with no degradation. Has the ability to output to additional formats.

  Cons

  Chose "Custom" when installing to uncheck the adware. How to use it initially is a little unclear, but quickly figured it out. Can't strip audio. Doesn't export to mpg or mpeg

  Summary

  I needed to take a longer video of baseball pitching and edit the innings down to just the pitches. Other software would degrade the image quality for some reason. This program did not do that. While watching the video I use the scissors to begin and end selections over and over, but did not understand that you must click "invert selections" once finished to actually get the video between the clicks. This button should really be called "Begin Cut" and "End Cut". The selections are red, so that's the indication that they are actually cuts. But, I figured it out. Then, if you just click "Save Video" you will get a nice stream of high quality video with your clips joined together. Perfect for my needs. If you want each clip to be its own video, you simply check the "split by selections" box before saving the video. I would recommend to anybody with basic video conversion or splitting needs. And don't worry about the adware. By now everybody knows to look at the installer carefully and uncheck unwanted programs. Seems like every friggin piece of software comes with this garbage now... such is the world we live in.

  Direct download tried to Install open candy malware! I took one of the other reviewers suggestions to use the direct download link to install this software because he thought other peoples complaints about malware where from the CNET installer. Then I scanned it with Avast it came out clean, so I scanned it with super antispyware and it came out clean. Then I scanned it with io bytes anti malware it came out clean. Then I clicked on install and the button came up to click on, before I could hit the button Malware Anti pop came up saying it blocked and attempt to install a pup open candy! But the install button was still there so I clicked install hoping nothing else would install since the open candy malware was blocked. I guess I'll see if it was a foolish move!<br /><br /><span class='notifyMsg'> Updated </span>on Jan 7, 2015<p/>When I uninstalled this software with IObit uninstaller, it failed to detect a second program that this program installs (some junk trying to get you to by their products) and didn't get uninstalled with the programs uninstaller or IObit power uninstall setting, so I went an deleted the folder that that second program was in, but that still left 2 annoying icons on the Metro Screen in windows 8.1 with no way to remove them so I tried to use stem restore because I set a restore point before installing the software, but system restore failed and when I finally got my computer to boot right, I had to reinstall Malwarebytes Anti-Malware because that program was malfunctioning after the failed system restore, miraculously the 2 annoying icons in Metro from the second program this app installs where gone. Just another reason not to install this program(s)! I checked it a long draw out process where you have to elevate your privileges to get into the Metro program and icon folder to undo!

  Summary

  I rarely write reviews but I have to take time to give back to download community because I depend on reviews by experienced users when looking for new software. I decided to digitally capture my 8mm tapes to MPG files. This left me with large files that needed to be chopped up into smaller ones based on dates and events within those large files. I have two boxed software video editing software but they clunky to use. I wanted something that would let me easily subdivide these files. This was the perfect solution. The files large fairly quickly in Dell Latitude E4300 laptop running Windows 7. The preview window stays in sync with the slider below. The program can automatically find breaks between video clips and add a Tag, but I wanted more precision so I turned that feature off and did it manually. The ability to advance and backup one frame at a time made this easy. You can also zoom in and out to make tagging more precise. When the file is completely tagged, you just click the Save Video button with the check mark for Split by Tags selected and the program does the rest. I set the preferences to put the dissected files back into the same folder as the original. The smaller files are named according to the tags which are just numbers. The resulting videos are equal in quality to the original with no drift of video and audio tracks. You can also set the program to set tags by a defined number of playing minutes (i.e. tag every 10 minutes). There is more the program can do (rotate videos, convert to alternate video formats, etc.), but I am not taking time to explore right now because I need to get back to my project. If you are looking for an extremely easy to use program for splitting up your videos, give this a try.
