Editors’ Review
Free Internet Window Washer is yet another contender in the browsing-privacy category, but its spotty performance and lack of navigational flow left a lot to be desired.
The user interface is bland in appearance, but simple enough to understand. However, the commands along the left side of the small window aren't in the most logical order. The result is an interface that lacks any kind of flow, making it difficult to know where to go next. Regardless, using the Wash Settings menu, we were able to check off the cleaning options we wanted to include in the wipe process.
The program does extend its cleaning functionality to Netscape, Opera, and Firefox in addition to Internet Explorer. It also lets you schedule cleanings using preset increments. But it all proved pointless because while the program successfully emptied our Recycle Bin and cleared any temporary files, it failed to clear our IE browsing history. A tally at the bottom of the interface lets you know the total number of items and space to be washed, but we found it inaccurate when compared with its actual performance.
The program offers a Help menu, but it doesn't make up for the poorly designed user interface and unreliable performance.
Free Internet Window Washer’s attempt to support multiple browsers is commendable, but its failure to execute core functionalities like clearing browsing history is a major drawback. Effective privacy tools must offer both reliability and usability, which this program lacks.
For instance, scheduling cleanups is a helpful feature, but it is rendered ineffective if the cleaning tasks are only partially completed. Additionally, the interface's confusing layout increases the learning curve unnecessarily, making it less accessible for novice users.
For users seeking a more reliable and comprehensive alternative, tools like BleachBit are worth considering. BleachBit offers similar browser-cleaning capabilities but with better performance and broader functionality. Unlike Free Internet Window Washer, BleachBit effectively clears browsing histories across multiple browsers, removes system clutter, and supports advanced privacy features like secure file shredding.
Furthermore, its interface is straightforward, with clearly labeled options and logical navigation, making it suitable for both beginners and advanced users.
Bottom Line
While Free Internet Window Washer aspires to be a contender in the browsing-privacy category, its inconsistent performance and confusing interface undermine its usability. Tools like BleachBit or even the more feature-rich CCleaner offer more reliable solutions for maintaining browsing privacy and system cleanliness.
Until significant improvements are made, it’s best to opt for a more capable alternative.
