An IE replica in most respects, Free Browser suffers from some inexcusable misses. As expected, you'll find standard navigational buttons, robust search capabilities, and pop-up protection.

The search bar appears below the address bar for quick look-ups. Searches can be accomplished using AltaVista, Ask.com, Google, Yahoo, and a few others. You'll get to choose how pop-ups are handled and whether to show the number in the browser or to log them. Although the entire scheme isn't skinnable, you can change the background and font of the address and search bars.

Password protection to guard your favorites, history, options, and e-mail is offered, although the check boxes to select to do so are off-limits. We also found it odd that our favorites list from IE didn't merge in. Even worse, Free Browser's IE Favorites Converter on the toolbar menu didn't work at all. Web surfing wasn't bad, but it wasn't any faster than any other browser out there.

Although you can surf as usual with it, there isn't anything special here for you to give up your current browser.

plain, boring. extra steps to save favorite compared to any other browser. no skins.

nothing to recommend this above IE except speed. If you want an IE based browser, stick with Acoo, Maxthon or Slimbrowser. They have many more features.

The user interface is clean and you can select from 8 search engines to use.

FreeBrowser displays LARGE buttons. I could not find an option to change them to a smaller view. There is NO tabbed browsing with this FreeBrowser and as for the speed? Well, IE6, Opera, FireFox, Avant and a couple others are more quick. The options that come with browser are limited indeed. For example, Address Bar, History, Homepage, Layout, Misc, Password Lock, Privacy and Progress bar are the selections that you can alter/set. In their own categories you'll find extremely limited options. Just coming to DOWNLOAD.COM this browser informed me of a script error and asked if I wanted to continue. FreeBrowser also won't automatically fetch your IE favorites. This is an EXTREMELY simple browser that does one thing as advertised, it uses little resources. If you want a stable, fast IE shell, Avant, Maxthon Lite and Slim Browser will fill your need with more options. If you want a super tiny browser that goes for the speed record, I recommend MP9 Surfer or Dragonfly. MP9 Surfer seems more stable though.

Free Browser 1.7.38 is so small, even smaller than Opera, and so fast opening web pages. It gets into ALL sites and is a very good bare boned fast browser. A real nice alternative to IE.

I don't understand the TWO search bars. There is an updated version that I haven't downloaded yet and I don't think I will. If you like Mp9 Surfer, you'll like this one even better. It is very simple and to the point. No tabbed browsing and once you have one pop up blocker do you really need another? This version has the address bar and search bars in a hideous blue color and you can't tell if you've highlighted the address or not. I think I'd sacrifice a little speed for something that has a better history like Opera or Firefox.

I'm surprised CNet and more reviewers haven't picked up on this little jewel. Free Browser is very quick at opening pages and surfing the web. It has one of the best popup blockers I have ever used. Free Browser won't crash and I have tried to crash it! It takes up very little ram and gets to all sites. 5 Stars and two thumbs up!

Version 1.8 added buttons such as What's New in about menu, Lock The Web, Yes and No button to convert favorites from IE to FB. Moved searchbar and search button. Moved search URL to options under homepage. Removed search button from toolbar and tools menu. Fixed the download link, colors of buttons and text, all ontop Windows, and some minor and major bug issues.
