This simple Othello game lacks polish, but it is challenging and completely free. One caveat: during installation, be sure to opt out if you don't want a toolbar from the developer installed on your machine. Freak Othello is played just like the classic board game from which it takes its name. In terms of graphics, the application isn't likely to thrill even casual gamers, and its complete lack of sound effects seems like an oversight. Available features include the ability to play with either color pieces, take back faulty moves, and compete against four AI opponents. In our tests, we easily vanquished the first computer opponent, but playing on the Grand Master setting was extremely tough. Freak Othello won't knock anyone out in terms of appearance, but since it costs nothing, fans of the game should certainly give it a whirl.
Worth a try. Easy download and install. Fun,Fast game!!

Hard-hittin' othello
yar
Pros
No nonsense othello. It's a small and well-written program with acceptable graphics and challenging AI. The author has tweaked it a lot and it's probably the best othello program out there. It's a good board game!
Cons
The AI levels vary quite widely. The easiest computer opponent is pretty easy to beat, but just a level or two harder is a very tough challenge. I wish there were less steep of a learning curve against the computer. Boo also to the Yahoo toolbar, for which you have to opt-out. (I don't know if the version on CNet has the toolbar or not, as I downloaded it a long time ago.)

Extremely Advanced
mcfuddlenuts
Pros
Smooth gameplay, plenty of difficulty levels, abiltiy to scroll through each move to see how game progressed and what went wrong/right, hint system.
Cons
Even the lower difficulty levels are extremely difficult for an amatuer. Using the hint system for the entire game has never resulted in a win for me. In a five game test, the computer won byat least 22 tiles every time, with a best score of 55-9.

Pros
No installation required, fast game play, no bugs found, shows possible moves, simple interface.
Cons
Relatively too easy, even the Grand Master mode provided little hindrance. But for a beginner or novice, this would be a good start. Experts would find this abit too easy.

Small, Fast, Too Good
Storyteller
Pros
Small download; plays fast; shows moves; no adware/spyware
Cons
Frustrating. Even the lowest level is very good (too good). If you want to learn and get really good, get this; but if you want to win once in a while (say, once every 10 games or more), try another game.
