Instead of a stand-alone program eating up your system resources, this free Firefox add-on can ensure that young users are safe from inappropriate content. With a few simple clicks, FoxFilter successfully blocks select content on the Web.

FoxFilter can be accessed through your Preferences menu. The tabbed interface is very easy to read, and walks you through each security preference so that you don't miss a beat. The program comes preset with obvious keywords that would raise a red flag. You can edit the list and add your own keywords and Web sites. Likewise, you can add keywords that you want the program to ignore. Specific Web sites can be added to the list with ease. All of your settings can be password protected.

Fair would be awesome if remembered sites I've trusted

Pros
VERY sensitive filter. It will definitely keep your kids safe online if set at the most sensitive setting. No problems there.
Cons
At the most sensitive setting it has a problem forgetting to save sites to my trusted list. Which means I have to enter the password over and over again several times for various sites I normally frequent. Such as my email account or facebook. Gets very annoying.Emailed customer service for a fix to it forgetting sites I've added to trust list and they sent me to a google search for help. I tried that approach and it did not work. If I was an absolute beginner who knew NOTHING about computers at all I would not have understood that reply. Many people just want to pay for something, use it, have it work, or at least have their dilemma cleared up for them, or at least a reply to their dilemma.
Summary
Like I said it's great when it works the way it's supposed to. As a matter of fact i had for a year before this and it worked great, never had to contact customer service on a major issue. Just a couple of minor ones which they responded well too. Just don't seem to respond to this major one. So I guess until my year paid subscription runs out I'll just keep entering the password for almost every single site I visit, just to keep my kids safe online. Not what I had hoped for but I guess better than nothing??????? Did I mention this is the paid version using hosted settings? Bummer.
I could write a better web filter; needs improvement.

It doesn't miss much

If its blacklist has one item that is more than one word, it will block even if they are not in the same part of the page. It also blocks harmless words that have a blocked word as part of the word. It doesn't allow me to block page by page, rather than allowing or disallowing an entire domain.
Summary
Again, it needs more options rather than blocking all or nothing of an site. I definitely could write a better web filter.

I like hosted filtering the best. I can change settings on the fly if necessary for my kids to be able to do homework while still being blocked from the sites they don't need to see.
Cons
The filtering is a little too aggressive. Maybe I just have too much turned on. I'm still learning. I find myself having to add exceptions quite often.
Summary
This is one strong filter. I wa having trouble with filtering on firefix and came across this software. Now I don't worry about it. If you have computer savvy teens who have developed the habit of going to the wrong sites because they can...this is your software.
Be Careful - This can't be removed unless you pay them.

Looked like it might work, but when i installed it didn't work as well as most other products in this class.
Cons
This product CANNOT be disabled or uninstalled without paying to register the product. One star is too many.
Summary
This is NOT free, and it is NOT trial ware. If you install it you will have to pay. It cannot be uninstalled or turned off without registering the product, which will cost you -- either in money paid for a product you don't want, or in time removing and reinstalling Firefox to get Foxfilter out of there (which I cannot guarantee will work as I won't have time to do until the weekend). Be 100% certain that you want this BEFORE you install it. -=-=-=-=- The documentation says that you can remove it by going to add-ins and uninstalling it. I tried this several times, and it wouldn't work. When I dug deeper in the documentation, it said that the options to modify disable, or uninstall the products are turned off until you register it (presumably to secure the product). Taken together, this says that either I pay them $10 to register the product just long enough to uninstall it, or I reinstall Firefox to get it out that way. Paying their extortion is probably your cheapest option.
Whitelist blocks unwanted pages, allows useful pages.

Pros
This product allows a traditional blacklist or a whitelist. The whitelist allows an admin to specify only specific allowed sites; all others are blocked. The list can be updated at any time on any machine by any administrator with the password.
Cons
None really - the bugs I found when I first installed it are fixed now. Of course, one must use FireFox, but that's fine with me - I prefer it anyway.
Summary
I LOVE this product because it helps us to keep our adult education students from accessing porn, pictures of trucks, e-mail, and the like. They're allowed to go only to previously-specified educational sites. If we want to allow another site, we can do so on the spot by having an admin open the program interface and add the newly-desired site. We can also temporarily disable the product on the spot and re-enable it on the spot. We have yet to have a student break the program. Since only specific sites are allowed, we don't have problems with students downloading malware from bad sites or e-mail. And it's FREE! The only workaround that I know of is that although the computer's MSIE icon can be made to automatically go to FireFox (just make FireFox the default browser), a student with computer savvy can start MSIE from places other than a desktop icon. In other words, a student who knows how to find the MSIE executable can run MSIE instead of FireFox and avoid the whitelist. However, as noted above, we have yet to have a student who knows how to do this, and none have broken the program in FireFox. I will be recommending this product to the State of Kentucky for use in all its Adult Education Centers.
