Many people prefer to use big, full-featured photo-editing programs like Photoshop, but for others, those sorts of programs can be overwhelming and way too complex. Fotografix is a basic image editor that gives users a few advanced features, like the capability to work with layers, but that is generally geared toward the casual user.

The program's interface is quite plain, reminding us a lot of Microsoft Paint. Menus across the top and a toolbar down the left side give users access to the program's features. We appreciated the fact that the program employs a fairly standard set of menus and icons, making it easy for users to find what they're looking for. There are the typical image editing functions--cropping, rotation, resizing, and so-on. Users can adjust brightness, contrast, color balance, and levels. There is a handful of effects to choose from, including sharpening, blurring, and creating embossed or night vision looks, among others. Users can also add text, draw on images, and do limited image correction with a cloning tool. The program's online Help file is brief but adequate. Overall, Fotografix doesn't bring anything to the table that we haven't seen many times before, but it does manage to include the most important tools for basic photo editing. The program is easy to navigate, and users with any photo editing experience at all should be able to figure out most of its features.

Photografix comes as a ZIP file and is accessible after extraction with no installation. We recommend this program to all users seeking a basic, lightweight photo editor.

Needs more development and v2.03 apparently abandoned

Cons
Selections cannot be resized using handles. There is no slider for zoom, so zoom has to be in big steps such as 100% - 150% -225% - 337.5% Grid lines and ruler are not available.
Summary
This application ought to be the next level beyond Microsoft Paint, but like so many applications that are supposed to replace the applications bundled with Windows it omits some of the functionality of the Microsoft product. In particular the lack of resizable selections is a deal breaker for me

- Extremely lightweight and fast. - Far more functionality than I'd expect from a program this small.
Cons
- I wish I could move layers pixel by pixel with my arrow keys (like Photoshop's "nudge"). That would be easier than trying to get the placement just right with my mouse. - The pencil/brush tool doesn't work well. The line comes out spotted and choppy.
Summary
I've been looking for a program like this for years! I don't know why Fotografix never turned up in my previous searches, but I'm glad I finally found it. I use and love Photoshop, but it's overkill for quick tasks. It takes longer for Photoshop to open than it takes me to make a couple quick edits once it's finally ready. A lightweight image editor makes a lot more sense for simple edits. I've tried dozens of applications, but all of them were slow to open (They were faster than Photoshop, but that's a low bar. I wanted something lightning fast, and they weren't.) and/or lacking one of the few basic functions I needed. I've used Fotografix about a dozen times in the past few days, and it's exactly what I wanted. It opens as quickly as Notepad and has more functionality than I thought was possible in such a tiny app. Layers?! That was a nice surprise. Also available: - A few filters, including several for blurring and sharpening. - Adjustments for color, brightness, contrast. - Basic feathering and vignetting functionality. Fotografix is a great little program! It's not a full-featured graphic design tool like Photoshop, but it isn't trying to be. It's not super slick, but it doesn't need to be. It's a super fast, easy-to-use application for straightforward, basic image editing that won't even fill half a megabyte on your computer or jump drive. I doubt you'll find something smaller or faster that still gets the job done. (But if you do, comment and let me know! :-) )
