The 1998 WWII real-time-strategy (RTS) game Firefight suffers from poor graphics and extremely slow game speed. But to its credit, it's very realistic in some respects. You command a few dozen soldiers with mortars, rifles, SMGs, and a couple of tanks. Soldiers take cover behind hills and bushes, and units must be in radio range of your command squad to receive orders. Unfortunately, the game doesn't deliver the modern RTS basics. The graphics use a 256-color palette, and the sounds splutter. The interface is just a standard window with drop-down menus and gray buttons. Units respond slowly to orders and seem to crawl once they do. To scroll the screen, you have to hold the right mouse button and drag instead of just moving the cursor close to the screen border. Dedicated armchair generals might enjoy the one-scenario demo, but most gamers will probably opt for a more recent, full-featured game.

Vaery challenging and realistic psychology. Troops become pinned and demoralised by enemy fire, and you'll need to use proper tactics to keep up the momentum of an attack.

This game is good enough to be a military tactical trainer. It contains a number of historical mistakes but does an excellent job of simulating company level command for those who can live with its inaccuracies.

Firefight is the best real time strategy game I've seen in a long time. There's no resource management to contend with, just pure military strategy. It also has a superb AI.

It relies heavily on the use of artificial intelligence to create a realistic game, while having a user interface so simple and intuitive you can learn to play in minutes. These squads can be maneuvered around the large battlefield and ordered to fire on enemy positions.
