File Security Manager allows you to set, view and modify file and folder permissions (assign and change access rights), display, create and delete shared folders, take ownership of a file or folder even in Windows XP Home version which does not allow to disable simple file sharing and make available Security tab in Windows Explorer. The program provides with advanced access control functionality. It means the ability to grant different access permissions to individual resources (like files and folders) for different users of the system, local and network ones. For example, a certain file can be permitted to be read by some user but not permitted to write to file.File Security Manager integrates itself into Windows Explorer and lets you assign permissions for files and folders quickly and easily. You can either follow the simpler way to doing this by using the Security Wizard (which provides useful presets). File Security Manager also provides the useful features of Secure file deletion (removal), which means the file you delete cannot be restored and Advanced file attributes editor, which can be used to assign any (even unavailable within Explorer) attributes. During all security tasks you perform you can use File Security Manager as a fast and simple file manager.

Very Poor Program, Dreadful Support

In my opinion the software does not do what it claims. I bought two copies in case the free download was restricted, it wasn't, the program only works on a single pc, not across a local peer to peer network as they claim it will. I have now sent two seperate emails to their support desk asking for help and offering to pay for this support, these have not even been acknowleged. Very, very poor!

It works, kind of... This program merely provides a windows interface for the command-line cacls program that is shipped with XP Home, and it succeeds in this task.
Cons
There is no XP-Pro equivalent allowing you to make a folder inaccessible to ALL other users (eg. like you can with "My Documents" in XP Home). I applied "deny" access to all other users and then hacked around it by creating a new admin user. And don't tell me to make all of my family into restricted users because then they can't run their games or the virus protection that I use. <p> <p>There may be a way around this, other than setting specific users, but you are presented with various groups etc and things like "NT AUTHORITY" entities which would be confusing to most people. <p> <p>I may be a bit unkind to the makers here... this type of security may not be possible under XP Home at all. <p> <p>I guess there is a program that handles security properly - it's called XP Professional but it costs a fair bit more!

It is not like ordinary utilities - disk, tweakers, managers etc. there are a lot of such tools but there are no programs like File Security Manager!
