ffmpegX is a Mac OS X GUI to ffmpeg the "hyper fast video and audio encoder" (http://ffmpeg.sourceforge.net/). This GUI provides quick encoding to DivX, XviD, AVC/h.264, VCD, SVCD, CVD, DVD, 3GP, DV, MP4, MP4 for iPod, iPhone, MP4 H264 for Sony PSP, FLV, MOV, mp2, mp3, AAC & AC3. MPEG-2 encoding relies on mpeg2enc component from the mjpegtools package (http://mjpeg.sourceforge.net/MacOS/). DivX and XviD encoding and subtitles support relies on external mencoder component from http://sourceforge.net/projects/mplayerosx/. Includes bitrate calculators, a mpeg and DivX splitter for multiple CD burning, and other mpeg tools, including svcd to dvd converter and dvd to 4GB dvd compressor. Includes support for VOB subtitles encoding, DVD selectable subtitles, as well as SubRip, MicroDVD, SubRip, SubViewer, Sami, VPlayer, RT, SSA, AQTitle, JACOsub and MPsubt subtitles. When encoding to MPEG-1 or MPEG-2 it can author the video as VCD or XVCD (.bin/.cue files for burning with Toast by dropping the .bin into VCD window) or as SVCD, CVD or K/XSVCD (two .img files to be burned in Toast under Multitrack XA window), or as DVD (/DVD/ folder to be burned in Toast DVD mode and .img file in UDF format for burning in Disk Image app or Toast disk image mode).
Ran the secure cnet download. When the download was complete and I clicked the installer, nothing happened. Well almost nothing, chrome closed along with all my tabs. When chrome reopened itself, there were three new extensions and my default search engine had been switched to Yahoo.
Does everything I want it to do without any problems.

This product is absolutely horrible!
mrreida
Pros
It compresses video/audio files in many assorted formats...
Cons
Horrible interface, costs $15 (which is WAYYYYYY to much for this software) after trial, requires downloading 3 different UNIX command files off of the internet. If you go to the URL it provides, it doesn't work.
Summary
Horrible product... not worth the $15 dollars.
Terrific

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
This was a little daunting at first but it was only because of my lack of knowledge of the many video formats etc out there. After some experiments I have learned to love this application and paid/registered it. I still can't seem to get .srt files to work however...more experimenting.
It works as you'd expect it to

Summary
This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
FFMPEG is a pretty straightforward and easy to use product that works as you would expect it to do. It could be either used in a very simple way (convert file type A into type B) but has also the potential to allow you to do many more things if you wish to and if you can be bothered to go through the manual (convert to this or that type of bit-rate, join files into one, sub-titles, resize the screen, etc). So it is really everybody's cup of tea, from the occasional user to the more advanced one.
Essential Mac cinema tool in the field/studio.

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
ffmpegX (current and past versions), and their support, are some of the best resources for serious Mac film makers available today. I do a lot of shooting in extremely rural places in North America and in Europe with JVC digital cameras using hard drives instead of tape. I download the shoots into Powerbook G4s. FfmpegX has, throughout it's evolution, allowed me to convert my takes into pristine formats for editing and compatible sharing.
Major, the man behind the application stands behind his product, ffmpegX better than any other developer I have ever dealt with (I am sure you have experienced the all to familiar frustration of resolving app. issues with companies in the past).
Major is always on top of all problems, the simple and the complex ones. His rapid e-mail responses with help are only, at most, a few hours away. (I truly think that he never sleeps!). He is proud of his ffmpegX and is caring enough to be there when needed by its users. Always.
His evolution follows the leading edge of technology and he offers solutions way before the big companies do.
If you are serious about keeping up with your digital film options, ffmegX
and Major's support are the ways to go.
Very good and reasonably priced

Summary
This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
While I'm happy with FFMPEG X's capabilities and results and recomment it to others, there are a couple of major iffitations:
1. Installation of updates often requires additional updates to codecs, which can be time consuming. Therefore, I think it's best to avoid all but major updates.
2. The Real libraries feature seldom seems to work well, if at all.
Otherwise, it's certainly worth having as a tool.
