Planning pays: You're rewarded for constructing a sensible vault: Build and organize rooms -- water treatment, power generator, restaurants, and so on -- in a way that makes the best use of space and maximizes a room's ability to produce enough supplies to sustain your dwellers. You can increase a room's production by merging and upgrading rooms, and speed product by adding dwellers into a room.

If supplies grow short, you can tap the Rush button in a room to gather supplies. But if things go wrong, which often is the case in this circumstance, you'll lose the supplies, reset the clock, and possibly cause damage to the room. The Rush windows show you the likelihood of successfully gathering supplies instantly.

You're in charge: Bring wandering dwellers into your vault, and assign them to rooms based on their special stats. Your dwellers produce your water, energy, and food as well as explore outside of the vault in the wasteland to collect outfits, weapons, junk, and the currency of the game -- caps. You can also pair up dwellers to produce children and increase your dweller population.

Free to play: You can easily play for free by gathering resources, leveling up dwellers, and exploring the wasteland, and collecting caps to expand and improve your vault. And after you build an Overseer's Office, you can send dwellers out on quests to earn more caps and higher-levels supplies. However, if you do want to spend, you can buy lunch boxes that may contain caps, dwellers, and other supplies, starting at 99 cents for one.

Cons

Game benefits from constant attention: While you can certainly check in on your vault from time to time to grab resources and reorganize your dwellers, the game rewards constant attention, as you fend off raiders, put out fires, and reallocate resources to survive in your irradiated world.
