Pros
Does what it aims to.
Cons
Firstly you HAVE to use the timing system. There is no way to just red-screen you monitor at the touch of a button without it deciding when to return to normal. I ended up lying to it about my location in order to make the screen red when I wanted it red. Secondly you can't seem to set locations outside the US because you have to provide a zip code. Thirdly it keeps giving pop-ups about when you're going to wake up and you can't disable them. Fourth it's closed-source.
Summary
Redshift, an open source Linux product, is miles better. Keep an eye out for when it comes to Mac.
Pros
* This blue light filter does NOT reduce contrast. It changes only those colors that need to be filtered for blue (primarily noticeable on the white backgrounds on my LCD display).
* Also adjusts the filter for the type of lighting being used (flourescent, halogen, sunlight)
* It automatically turns on and off based on the sunrise/sunset times of one's location, though that can be changed by manually entering another city at the right latitude to suit one's own needs for turning the filter on and off.
* You can disable the filter if necessary temporarily.
Cons
Would be nice to be able to set the direct times at which to turn on and off the filter (rather than automatically choosing sunrise and sunset), but choosing a different city than the one someone is in also works (as long as the sunrise to sunset times are what you want -- weird hours wouldn't be accommodated).
Summary
Small footprint, great free program -- the only one that doesn't lose contrast when it is used (that is free--haven't tried others).
Pros
Installs easily in seconds on Windows 10
Minimal setup
It just works
Cons
Didn't find any
Summary
I was up in the middle of the night and the dazzle from my monitor was horrifying. I chanced upon a mention of f.lux in a news article and thought it was worth checking out. Within seconds, I was enjoying a rosy glow instead of the glaring white. Just what I needed.
Pros
Works just like the maker says. Great product if you want what it does, but see below for my problem.
Cons
Won't let me manually set the times when it shifts to nightime light and back to daylight. Insists on using local sunset and sunrise, which is useless to me. I live in Alaska, where summer days approach 20 hours and length, and ditto for winter nights. I need to be able to set the night light and day light shift times manually.
Summary
Works perfectly as billed. But useless if you don't want to go to bed at sunset and get up at sunrise. If it offered that feature, I'd give it 5 stars.

You might want to try manually setting your latitude much farther south at least into the lower 48 states and the farther east you set your longitude the earlier the sun sets. Perhaps try Missoula, Montana or Denver, Colorado or Kansas City, Kansas or ???
Pros
I am using this on both my phone and computer (home and work) and finding it is very good at filtering out the light that will impact my sleep cycle.
Cons
No negatives
Pros
Cuts out blue light.
Cons
User can't customize dimming and brightening times.
Summary
The user has to set their location to control the dimming. The program cuts blue light when the sun is below the horizon at that location. Not so good if for (Canadian) locations where daylight's too short in winter and too long in summer. I set my coordinates to the darkest place on earth closest to my time zone (north or south of me, depending on the season), and then I just start f.lux at the same time every night, instead of letting it run in the background and dim my screen automatically, changing with the seasons. Annoying, but a functional workaround.
Pros
Immediately reduced the eye strain I was feeling
Worked fine with Windows 8.1

All 4 and 5 star reviews... how often do you see that?
Cons
Haven't found any yet
Summary
I literally just downloaded this. I got two new computers in three days... one for myself and a new one from work. Both brand new Lenovos and both the first new computer I'd had in a few years. I had never had eye strain before and I could not handle looking at either one of these. It literally hurt. My IT guy at work and I were going through lots of different color management settings to try to improve it when I found this. I downloaded it and the relief was instantaneous. My eyes immediately felt better. I think there will still be some tweaking to do but the change is incredible and now I don't have to worry I won't be able to be productive at work because of needing too many breaks to get away from my computer screen!
Pros
Does what everyone says. has a very pleasant user interface now, too.
Works right on XP and 8.1
Cons
Doesn't say it works on Windows 8.1 (but it does).
Summary
I didn't realize I was so reliant on this little utility, which I've been using for years. Then I replaced my XP laptop with one running 8.1, and discovered I almost couldn't work at night. So I came here to re-install, and was very bothered to see it runs on Windows 7, but doesn't list 8. But I couldn't find a replacement, so I decided to try it, anyway. Very glad I did: it works fine, and now I can work fine, too.
All I can say is: Windows should come with this. IMHO: It's immoral to sell PCs without it.
Pros
Great piece of software ! It delivers on all the that its makers claim. Plus, a very well designed product; totally safe and stable.
Cheers to the team of f.lux !
Cons
Zero.
(Have been using it for four months now)
Pros
Works in the background, using a minimum of ram. The shift is "almost unnoticeable". Actually works! My eyes, they water considerably lesser now.
Cons
As I said, the shift is "almost unnoticeable". They could work on making the transition very slowly, so that the human eye accepts the transition without actually feeling the difference.
Summary
Highly recommended.
