Freeware? I don't think so - it is demo with deception, thus 1 star for wasting my time.

Video capture is too slow. File size is too large and compression failed all the time and nver saw the date time stamp at all. After 5 attempts I was frustrated and uninstalled the product.
Summary
The products advertised are far from reality. I had primarliy installed this product to get the date time stamp from my dV capture. Followed all the instructions at least 5 times, never saw the process complete successfully. The file size was very large for a 1-2 minute video to understand the features. Even then the software dropped a lot of frames and on preview of the video there was pixelisation and the video never played smoothly. As instructed I had made sure that there were no resource instensive programs running at the time of DV capture.

As of today (Jan 2, 2008), download.com has an old version of Exsate. This version does not work properly. In order to try the 2006 version, you have to go to Exsate site. Look it up on Google, I can not insert a link in this review. <p>The new version works. It stamped date and time on video files captured from miniDV and digital8 tape camcorders.
Cons
The interface could be better. It took me sometime to figure it out.
Summary
Small but powerful program is the Jack Russell of video editing software.

Pros
Exsate VideoExpress can preserve your DV timestamp and even periodically overlay the data onto your output file or DVD video. The only program that will do this to date! Great interface wizard will have you filling your hard drive in no time. Intuitive feature will even add transitions for you. This program will rewind the tape before and after recording to the hard drive. Also very few dropped frames (fewer than 30 per 100,000 frames for me).
Cons
The demo will render and compress the video with a watermark, but if you do not render a project there is no watermark on the sorted avi type 1 or 2 files. These are named according to the date and time the original footage was taken. For example 20010730.14.20.00.avi for a video taken July 30th 2001 @ 2:20PM (24hr clock). Buy the software to unlock the watermark on compressed video. Not as powerful as the competition if you want to add special effects or overlay sound tracks and create DVD menus.

I have never seen such a ridiculous and useless program. <p>You can't even use your own files. It does not allow you to select your own output location and is NOT compatible with a lot of file names. <p> <p>Please do not waste your time nor your money. <p>Looks like a program that a 3 year played around with.
