This limited CD ripper does what it promises without incident but lacks even some of the most basic features we consider necessary. eSan MP3 Builder's strongest point is its tabbed interface, which is easy to navigate and boasts an elegant, Mac-styled design. When we insterted our test disc, we were dismayed to find this program can't access the Web to retrieve track information, forcing you to label all your tunes by hand. It's also unfortunate the application only rips tracks to the MP3 format, though it at least lets you encode them using the space-concious VBR method. Flipping over to the second tab lets you browse your PC for WAV files and convert them into MP3s, a nice extra that nonetheless doesn't fully make up for the aforementioned omissions. In our tests, eSan MP3 Builder demonstrated decent ripping speeds, although the trial version will only let you extract odd-numbered tracks. Worse still, the built-in basic player doesn't even work. This audio app certainly has its share of shortcomings, but folks who only listen to MP3s and don't care about hand labeling their tunes might appreciate its ease of use.
