Editors’ Review
Earthquake 3D provides a fascinating look at recent seismic activity around the globe. While the program provides a great deal of information and options, it suffers from its complete lack of direction.
Earthquake 3D is packed with features that enhance how you view and interact with earthquake data. You can save display settings you prefer using the 12 preset views, and customize display colors to your liking. The program also shows the positions of the moon and sun with its lunar and solar rings, and allows you to add text labels on the display using custom captions.
It has a screensaver mode that displays live earthquake data when your computer is idle. The refresh timer ensures that all earthquake information is up-to-date automatically. If a new earthquake occurs, you can set the Earthquake Alarm Bells to alert you with sound, and you can even use your own sound files. The Headline News Ticker displays the latest earthquake news along the bottom of the screen.
You can also change the look of the globe with up to four external earth images that you provide. If you want more details on a specific earthquake, just double-click on its flag to bring up a detailed information page with local maps. The software allows you to filter earthquakes by magnitude, depth, and date, focusing only on the events that are important to you. You can also access a variety of earthquake feeds from sources like the USGS, EMSC, and others, which can be viewed individually or combined.
Earthquake 3D includes multiple sources for its earthquake data, offering a range from local to global perspectives. Sources like the USGS in the USA, GS RAS in Russia, and EMSC in Europe provide updates on seismic activities that can range from the last hour to the past 30 days. The software even supports custom feeds, allowing you to use your own data in CSV format.
We were initially impressed with the interface. The controls all looked basic, but soon we discovered that the Help file didn't do more than give a description of the product, and some actions we wanted to perform were not intuitive enough. The program itself was a spinning globe with magnitudes and the traditional multiring circles indicating earthquakes. We appreciated how the control panel let us filter quakes by severity and changed the globe's look to better see the quakes. This all functioned great, but zooming in was impossible. We learned with ease how to rotate the globe using our mouse, but could not get a closer look, even though it's the first thing the description promised. After several fruitless minutes we grew frustrated and gave up. On a more interesting note, the program did have a feature that updated the globe with the newest quakes. But this wasn't enough to rescue this program from its unfortunate lack of direction.
Bottom Line
Earthquake 3D is a freeware program. The program comes as a compressed file. Even though we loved most aspects of this program, its lack of direction makes it hard to recommend.
