Duolingo gives you the option of learning French, Spanish, German, Portuguese, Italian, or English through a diverse set of lessons. This app features a quiz-type approach interspersed with tips and brief explanations to help you fully understand the material being covered. It is designed to be used a little bit every day, so you can pick up another language whenever you have a few free minutes.

To begin using Duolingo, you have to set up a free account with a username, password, and e-mail. Next, select the language you want to learn from the list of available options, and you're ready to go. Anyone can start at the very beginning, but if you have some knowledge of the language you've chosen, you can try and test into higher level lessons. Otherwise, you'll unlock the higher levels as you complete the ones before. The lessons are made up of several different types of questions. Some ask you to type the translation of a sentence, speak a sentence into the microphone, or use provided words to create a translation. Conveniently, there is an option to tap if you can't use a microphone at the time you're working on the lesson.

Lessons can be repeated whenever you want, or you may opt to continue on to the next one. The app's interface is intuitive and accessible, with helpful hints popping up from time to time and clear instructions about how to answer questions. Anyone interested in learning any of the languages that Duolingo supports should definitely give it a try.
