Editors’ Review
DuckCapture is a compact screen capture tool designed to keep things focused and efficient. It offers four main capture types: active window, custom region, full screen, and scrolling web page. The Capture a Tall Web Page option captures an entire webpage in one go.
Annotation tools let you mark up screenshots with arrows, blocks, and text. DuckCapture also offers customization options for file names and hotkeys, allowing tasks to be organized and completed quickly. It doesn't use much of your computer's power or memory, and it has tools to edit your screenshots. However, sometimes it doesn't save your pictures correctly.
Multiple modes, multiple tools
DuckCapture divides its functionality into four accessible modes, which are window, region, full screen, and scrolling capture. Each mode has a designated button on the interface, so selecting a capture method is quick. For scrolling pages, the software automatically scans the page length and stitches it together. This function helps when capturing content that doesn't fit within a single screen, like web articles or documents, without needing extra software.
Once a screenshot is taken, you can immediately annotate using built-in tools. These include arrows, text, rectangles, and highlight blocks. Multiple Capture lets you select different areas in one session, so you can combine regions into one image. Screenshots can be printed, saved, copied to the clipboard, or shared online. However, the editing tools aren’t advanced, but they cover common tasks without clutter or complexity.
Saving images can be inconsistent. Some screenshots can potentially not appear in the selected location, even after choosing different file types or directories. No error messages are shown during the save process, and the absence of a help file limits troubleshooting options. Images can still be uploaded to Minus and downloaded manually, though this adds extra steps. This can disrupt workflows that rely on direct file saving.
Pros
- Multiple capture types including scrolling pages
- Built-in annotation tools
- Custom hotkeys and auto-naming options
- Lightweight and simple interface
Cons
- Only has basic editing tools
- Frequent issues with image saving
Bottom Line
Quick snaps
DuckCapture gives you a clean way to take various types of screenshots and annotate them without excess features. Its capture modes and editing tools are functional and accessible, with handy extras like scrolling capture and hotkey support. However, the tool lacks advanced editing tools. While useful for quick, disposable captures or clipboard sharing, it lacks dependability for long-term image storage.
What’s new in version 2.7
- Minor UI tweaks
- Added option to merge multiple capture regions
