Hit n' Run Club of Useless Promises
MAC_1984- Pros
- Cons
- Summary
- This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
This developer promised the world, took our cash, and delivered very little. If you were to gauge this software against Toastâ??Toast would have a Ph.D while Disco is still in kindergarten. Soooooooo much hype you would have thought this application were running for President. If you want to throw your money away on false promises, go ahead, but I will be avoiding this developer and any affiliations he has with other developers or businesses, period.
good idea, OK execution...terrible developer

- Summary
- This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
It is just mediocre. You can get Toast for not much more after rebates and it will do MUCH more and get this...actually work! There are issues with disc spanning and other 'features' like the smoke. If you attempt to contact the developer then you will get no response. Thats what you get for buying from a (teenage) developer who says himself that he can't focus on projects but just hops from idea to idea. If you look at his history he hypes something to death, grabs the money from initial sales, and then *poof* gone. Not what I look for in software. I like it to work and then if there is a problem I want the developer to fix it (updates....1.0.3 came out a YEAR later) or at least reply to emails.

- Summary
- This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
I needed something easy for the wife to use that didn't cost as much as Toast and that was easier than using the Finder. Disco is exactly that. So far it's been great. The only two areas that need improvement are: 1. Burning of VIDEO_TS folders (they don't always work where Toast does) 2. It would be nice to be able to select the disc type you want to burn from the front on the interface. Going into the prefs is too annoying. Plus, those descriptions need to be easier for the novice to understand (i.e. UDF = DVD data or movies)
Up in smoke

- This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
Considering all the pre-launch hype, this application is a complete rip-off. It's mainly a smokey wrapper about OS X's disk burning framework. One can easily use Disk Utility instead. They wanted to have Toast for breakfast. And we wanted an alternative to Toast. But Disco does not even come close. I am nothing but gutted.
EXCELLENT

Best burning app out there (and fun to)

- This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
I have worked with Toast. Great app, but quite expensive and did not want to upgrade. With Disco the complete process never failed and it did the job without difficult questions. And the smoke is kewl.
Not there yet

- This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
Although Disco didn't crash, all the disc's I burned with disco ended up as toast. Half way down the burning process it stops burning and ejects the disc's? Up till now I have not succeeded in burning a cdrom or dvd with disco on my MacBook pro.
The Good AND Bad

- Summary
- This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
My first time trying Disco is crashed. I bought it anyway why? I had recently acquired my wife a Macbook and it was the perfect app for her to burn discs. The problem I encountered was addressed explicitly in the 1.0.2 update. I would have highly recommended this app to anyone if it remained at $15, but like a lot of other Mac software the price has skyrocketed with the surging popularity of the hardware. If you need to copy Audio CDs and don't want to buy Roxio Toast, then this may be your app of choice. Likewise if someone needs the most simple burning application ever (that is also very powerful) Disco is a good choice again. But if neither of those is important, get the open source Burn which is just as powerful, and it's free, and still pretty easy to use.
works as advertised

- This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
i've been trying out disco since the early betas. it works well for me burning both data and images just fine. my only complaint is the non-standard interface doesn't sit well with aqua. maybe 10.5 will change that, we'll see. the verification process takes very long (seems to be longer than burning!) as well. if you can't afford toast, this might be the application for you. i was looking for an alternative, but am currently sticking with toast 8 (which was released before disco was finalized).
Getting close

- Summary
- This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
When I copied a CD several times in a row I had problems with Disco. It hung the computer and I had to restart. If you are just copying one CD the program works fine. It has a nice clean and simple UI and does it's job just fine. I will not buy it until it gets stable. It is not worth the trouble to restart the computer.
