  Dark Forces is certainly a classic that you should always keep around somewhere on your hard drive. If you've ever watched Star Wars and really wanted to participate in the early battle where Leia's ship is boarded by Storm Troopers, this game is for you! LucasArts lists a 486/66 as a requirement, though I remember running this game back in the day with an AMD 386 at 40Mhz with no FPU. You'll definitely want your DOS box (this game won't run in Windowed mode under 9x or NT) to have a sound card so you can enjoy the awesome samples of the movie's laser pistols. Moreover, George Lucas knows a thing or two about sound.Otherwise, with a decent CPU and an SB16 or older, you'll want a 512MB ISA VGA card for high frame rates with the screen streched out to the maximum. This is an older came, so it won't crawl if you don't have the latest nVidia board. The 3D engine was nice for it's time. Though I don't doubt the production at Lucas Arts were capable of creating a 3D engine from scratch, it has many qualities that make me think it was a license of Duke3D or maybe even ROTT. The walls could be angled and stacked but they were limited to rectangles. The enemies are very nicely done bitmapped sprites which are superbly realistic. It is my opinion that enemies weren't done this nice with texture-mapped polygons until Unreal Tournament was released. But, this game isn't completely free of polygon modeling, after all it was LucasArts which brought you X-Wing (think StarFox done right and set in the StarWars galaxy), When you complete the demo level, during play you will see a 3D model of a starship land to pick you up and drop you at your next mission. Cool! The gameplay is nice too. The game could of used cross-hairs, but the auto-aim feature makes up for this. The automap is pretty basic. It's not very challenging or puzzling and it doesn't overwhelm you with enemies like other shooters (DooM) did, but it is still alot of fun to play. So in conclusion, this is a great game. Though it's technology is yesterday's news thanks to id software always pushing the envelope, the game had features that made it top of the line for it's time. It has held up to the test time, meaning it's still fun to this very day (if you can make it work). Stunning visuals may sell games, but it doesn't mark them as fun or not.It also doesn't take terrible expensive hardware to run this game anymore, a $10 or $20 bargain at the swap meet will suffice. The superb realism of the monsters isn't even matched by today's incarnation of the game (Jedi Knight 2), though the quality can be seen in some top notch polygon based shooters (UT). You still reading this? Go download it already, it's a classic!

  I liked the game when it first came out. Here in Germany, I wasn`t allowed to buy it in an official way, but had to buy it from a friend. I didn`t regret this step! I could cry, because such games are no more produce
