Editors’ Review
iTunes is the default program for managing all of your Apple devices, but it's certainly not the be-all and end-all for managing your iPhone or iPod content. CopyTrans promises an easy, smart, safe way to transfer and back up your Apple device content, and it delivers.
Right from the start, the app provides helpful resources, such as links to online user guides and video demos, ensuring even beginners can navigate it with ease. However, given the simplicity of the layout, many users won’t need these resources. The interface is designed to be intuitive and functional, allowing you to plug in your device and immediately access its content. When we connected our iPhone 4, the program quickly pulled in our playlist and camera data, organizing the music by Genre, Artists, and Albums.
CopyTrans offers two backup modes: Smart and Manual. The Smart backup automatically transfers everything from your device to your PC, making it ideal for users who want a quick and complete backup. The backup process itself is smooth, and you can monitor its progress through a pop-up window that shows status updates and gives you the option to pause or cancel.
While transferring our 89 files took only about seven minutes, larger content libraries may take longer to complete, depending on how much data you have stored.
After the backup is done, CopyTrans doesn’t just copy the files to your computer but also imports them directly into iTunes. This is a particularly useful feature for those who still want to maintain their iTunes library while using CopyTrans for file management. In the settings, users can opt to display album artwork and even send error reports or usage statistics back to the CopyTrans team.
While CopyTrans shines in simplicity and functionality, it’s worth noting that the trial version only allows up to 250 tracks per transfer, limiting its potential for larger libraries unless you upgrade to the full version. This limitation sets it apart from iTunes and similar apps, which may not have such restrictions but may also lack the streamlined, easy-to-use interface of CopyTrans.
CopyTrans comes as a zip file, but installs and uninstalls cleanly. It's a worthy program for restoring your iPhone, iPod, and iPad content and easily transferring files between devices. We recommend it for all user levels.
Bottom Line
CopyTrans is an excellent tool for users of all levels who need an easy way to back up and transfer Apple device content. It installs and uninstalls cleanly and offers a viable alternative to iTunes for those looking to manage their files with more flexibility.
