Introducing Compost, the automatic trash management software for Mac OS X. compost solves your Trash problems by letting you set a time limit on your trash, cap its size, and maintain a minimum amount of space. Whether youre an individual Mac user, or a network administrator looking to help your users better manage their free space, Compost can help you.
I downloaded the trial version, principally to allow me to delete individual files from USB dongles without emptying the trash. It never asked me to pay, but it also never worked. I'd never encountered a Mac app that didn't work, so I paid up... and it still didn't work. Another and cheaper product known as Smart Trash, which I found via Apple's own site, does seem to work so far, and so I would recommend that instead.

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
I experienced no issues that could not be resolved. Paid the shareware fee and just fine. My only wish is for one added feature which I have used now for about 15 years. Items put into the trash are deleted immediately. One benefit of this feature it trains the cautious user always to back up. However "Compost" can be set up so it acts very close to that. I can see me using this package now for years to come. . For former iCan users this is a definite alternative.
Being able to adjust the icon size of the desktop trash would be nice but not important same comment about themes but even less important.

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
Wow, I'm surprised Apple hasn't tried to "assimilate" this application.
The features allow for flexibility and customization you never realized you needed and once you start using them you wonder how you ever got along without them.
Thank you for providing this little gem!

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
This is a fantastic utility, and it receives great support from the developer.
I had a few issues with RAM and CPU usage with an earlier version. I sent email to the developer and received a reply within a few hours. Over the next few days, the developer sent several revisions that ultimately solved all the problems. I've only rarely received such quick and capable support from a develooer.
The new additions in this version are extremely useful. The ability to open the trash on any volume and selectively delete items via a contextual menu is great when you need to get rid of an item you've already trashed and later realize is taking up too much disk space.
The menubar item allows you to get a snapshot of the trash and free space on all your volumes. This allows you to easily zero in on where you might be able to free up disk space.
This utility basically allows you to ignore your Trash. By setting various parameters as to when trash gets emptied, you can simply let it manage the trash for you. And these parameters can differ on a volume by volume basis.
There are few utilities which offer the features of this one. It's a great value.
Sweet!!

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
I've been using an automatic trash emptier since the early 90s - Trashman, then Trash Tender. Greg's Compost is absolutely the best one of these I've tried. Transparent, great features, ridiculously low price. A winner.

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
Great little trash manager. After searching for other types of trash apps, I stumbled across this, which has a new approach, which I like.
Developer is quick to respond and open to suggestions - he even wrote a quick applescript for me regarding a feature I was looking for!
For someone with multiple hard drives that you don't ant to empty all at once, it's indispensible (no pun intended).

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
I've been looking for a utility like this for years. I had given up hope. It's unbelievable how many Trash related utilities there are, and yet they all missed the most obvious and valuable enhancement. Compost is as simple as it gets and does what it says. I'm a long time Mac lover, but the "all or nothing" approach of the Apple Trash made it virtually useless, other than as an undo if you immediately realized your mistake, or as a vast waste of space if you emptied it only occasionally. The "pre-Trash" and Desktop Trash solutions were clumsy and un-Mac-like. The fact that Compost runs in a control panel is a nice touch also. Thank you!
