In Commandos: Behind Enemy Lines, each soldier in your squad has unique skills. You manage a team that includes a Green Beret, known for stealth and close combat; a Marine, who handles underwater tasks and piloting; a Driver, who operates vehicles and heavy artillery; a Sapper, who deals with explosives and traps; a Sniper, who targets enemies from a distance; and a Spy, who wears enemy uniforms to blend in. The game focuses on using strategy over brute force. Players must plan their moves carefully and use each commando's special skills to their advantage.

The game's camera system allows players to view the battlefield from various angles, helping them better plan their strategies. You can also team up with friends and play together over a network or online.

You play as an allied officer who leads the squad through 20 missions. Each mission starts with a detailed briefing that helps you understand the goals and the background of the operation. During the missions, it's crucial to avoid direct fights as much as possible because the commandos are not equipped for heavy combat.

Enemies vary from regular foot soldiers to officers, each type requiring different tactics to handle. The game increases in difficulty if enemies become alerted to your presence. They may set off alarms, making your mission harder to complete.
