CleanArchiver is a simple and nifty archiving utility. It supports not only standard archive types such as gzip, bzip2, and zip, but also compressed Disk Image. In addition if the DropStuff application published by Allume Systems Inc. is installed on your system, CleanArchiver can create StuffIt and StuffIt X archives by calling DropStuff via AppleScript.

Moreover CleanArchiver has the ability not to include system files peculiar to Mac OS X such as .DS_Store and custom icon file (Icon\r) in your archive. So your archive is always clean on other operating systems. CleanArchiver powerfully supports you to create archives with various archive types and convenient options. Ultimately, just CleanArchiver is enough as the archiver put on your Dock.

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.<br />ZipIt is apparently broken by OSX 10.4.11 so this might be the only zip archiver left standing that is worth a look. Wow it's slow (G5 dual 2GHz with 4.6GB ram) and it is a tad non-standard but it does work.
Version 2.4a4 works great!

I was working on a way to create <em>Universal HTML Widgets</em> that will work with both the Opera and Apple's Widget platform. But Mac OS's crappy handling of archives (.zip files) threatened the entire project. Now however, I have the first ever Universal HTML Widget runing on my desktop. So thanks! Highly recommended to avoid all kind of Mac OS crappy archive handeling and bundeling.

Guess they threw in the towel against Stuffit...which is now a whopping $80 just to be able to Zip files. So, CleanArchiver is most welcome! Nicely done with all the options too. Great job!

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.<br />Great product -- nice to have one program to access all the different formats out there. One suggestions, however. It would be great in the program would allow you to select a format on dragging a file on to it (like LineBreak does). I use this program to compress files for different platforms and it would be nice not to have to open the program first to select the proper format and then drag the file on top of it.

I wish there was a simple way to add CleanArchiver to the file selection contextual menu, or to use it with Automator to do just that.

If the policy generally is to give less stars from personal adversities definitely I am against such a behavior. ClearArchiver has always been 5 stars only, and its behavior has always been best of all similar products, including commercial ones!
