  There is a solution here. mac dot softpedia dot com/dyn-postdownload.php?p=12633&t=0&i=3 This will get you the download of vpnclient-darwin-4.9.01.0280, from some university in denmark, I installed it, tested it, works very well.

  Cisco VPN use to work for me but gives the Error 51 - cannot communicate with VPN Subsystem since I've gone to 64-bit mode. Restarting does not fix. I've gone to using Apple's own VPN in the Network Sys Pref. Anyone know of a fix to make this work?

  I have to use VPN to access the office. So long as I can do this with Apple VPN I can survive but why can't Cisco get this working? Searching the web shows I am not the only one seeing Error 51.

I do, however, recommend using this with Shimo, an alternate GUI that gives you much more integration with the OS. For folks with Leopard and .Mac, give the beta of Shimo 2.0 a try. That addresses issues with Back to My Mac that I'm sure Cisco hasn't even thought about as well as longstanding pains with Fast User Switching.

The product works fine with my previous connection profiles, and also works OK via PPP (a Bluetooth to 3G phone link). However ... Cisco VPN seems to be completely incompatible with Leopard file sharing. When a VPN connection is active, it's not possible to connect to AFP shares or do VNC screen-sharing on other Macs on the same LAN. This is even with "local LAN access" enabled on the profile. This is quite possibly more a Leopard sharing and/or firewall problem, however. I also have a Netgear ReadyNAS fileserver on my LAN. With a VPN connection active, it's still possible to mount an AFP share on the NAS, even though shares on other Macs are inaccessible. Bonjour advertising is also affected. An active VPN connection causes advertised servers to drop off the net. If you use Force Quit to Relaunch Finder, however, they come back. My conclusion: Cisco VPN 4.9.01.100 does its job. Leopard may not be doing its job. Let's wait for Leopard 10.5.2 before making a final judgment.

  This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.<br />Finally, Cisco pulls it together. 4.9 works great on my Quad G5 with dual ethernet. Simply chose "Upgrade" with the install package and I didn't even have to change my remote VPN login configuration. It feels great using a real terminal again, instead of hacking through Virtual PC.
