Microsoft Excel is the business world's standard spreadsheet application for lots of reasons, not the least of which is the ability to expand its capabilities through add-ons. CellworXs by Softalis is a free Excel add-on that adds significant data analysis capabilities, including the ability to generate dynamic reports and offline report versions that can be shared with others. CellworXs has the potential to greatly reduce the time and expertise needed to create sophisticated analyses. Instead of requiring lots of "help calculations" and in-depth technical knowledge, CellworXs uses simple formulas to enable users to build database-specific analysis, consolidation, and reporting tools to use in Excel. CellworXs also adds some much-requested worksheet functions, such as the ability to convert a text string into a real formula, and it can generate offline Excel retrieve reports to share with Hyperion users and others. CellworXs used to be known as ValueMaker, but the new release contains not only ValueMaker but also the Structurizer and NoDupe tools. The latest version of CellworXs is totally free, and compatibility issues with Excel 2010 have been resolved. We tested it with both Excel 2007 and 2010 with no issues.

CellworXs is very easy to install, opening Excel when the steps finished. Some users will need to enable macros to use the add-in. CellworXs placed a tab at the end of Excel's ribbon toolbar. The CellworXs ribbon is divided into four sections; one each for the three tools and another for the Help menu, including not only documentation but also an uninstaller and other features. The Help file features links to a detailed user's manual and sample files to download, as well as a demo video and other resources. The Help button also opened the add-on's settings sheet, with tabs for each tool's options as well as support links and even the ability to donate.

How much does CellworXs do? More than we can describe in this space. Basically, though, Structurizer adds OLAP capabilities to Excel files, ValueMaker generates offline reports, and No-Dupe-Copy makes it easy to remove duplicates from lists. This free productivity bundle is recommended for all top Excel jockeys.

Developer's Description

Extend Microsoft Excel functionality with multidimensional and hierarchical analysis.

CellworXs (the new release of the former ValueMaker add-in) is an Excel productivity tool for any analyst who is looking to stretch Excel's analytical capabilities, to build dynamic drill reports and to generate off-line retrieve reports. It provides multidimensional and user defined hierarchical data analysis and reporting capabilities with simple formulas, where traditional Excel reports would have required lots of additional "help calculations" and very "technical" Excel user knowledge. Users can now simply build powerful analysis and consolidation tools on their Excel database. In addition a series of worksheet functions have been added, that many users desperately wanted in Excel. CellworXs allows also to generate off-line Excel retrieve report versions (e.g. Hyperion and others) to share with other users, just by replacing retrieve (or any other defined) formula (or link) with values and to give the possibility to restore them even after the workbook has been saved.
