breveCreatures is a screensaver that simulates the evolution of virtual creatures in a physically simulated 3D world. Beginning initially with random creatures, the screensaver uses a genetic algorithm to develop creatures capable of realistic locomotion behaviors.

The concept and algorithms implemented in breveCreatures are based on Karl Sims' seminal work, "Evolving Virtual Creatures".

Evolving creatures is a bit more interesting than involving just walking behaviors, but it probably takes more iterations to get a creature that works well. The addition of self-shadowing is cool Ã¢?? makes it look like an old 80's raytrace. The only problem I've encountered so far is that occasionally the placement of a creature will wig out and the creature will still fly off to nowhere. This doesn't affect the genetics, though, since the distance becomes Not-a-Number. I've only done four generations so far and the creatures still don't look like anything. It would be cool if the algorithms would result in creatures with varied methods of movement (e.g. four-legged, spider-like, snakes, frogs, etc.) but I'll have to wait a while to see.

Although the creatures are running that hard at some point that they fall of the stage... why hasnt this one an infinite stage to evolve? Also a few extra options (statitics font/size, black background etc.) like BreveWalker had will be nicer. Good luck with it!
