Lights Out is an application designed to give users more control over Apple's Energy Saver. It helps solve the problem of Energy Saver insomnia. Many software packages, scanners, and other peripherals interfere with the Mac's normal sleeping patterns. Lights Out offers a secondary idle timer to put your Mac to sleep even when Energy Saver fails to do so. The application also offers hot corners to instantly put your Mac to sleep, or keep your Mac awake. Lights Out offers the ability to customize Energy Saver settings for individual applications. This can be useful for long downloads, iTunes streams, cd or dvd playback, etc. Lights Out can even logout or shutdown your Macintosh after a specified idle period.

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.<br />Many of the "negative" comments here reflect what people want an alternative energy saver program to do, not what this particular software offers. I was looking for a program that could dim the screen quickly when running certain programs so I could extend the battery run time on my G4. This program does exactly that. While I would agree that the interface/execution of the program is a little misleading in that the hot corners do not reflect the user's preferred settings for the active application (they always activate CPU sleep), if your patient and let the timers do their thing it works fine. Would I like to see some of the features suggested? Sure ("Turn off" screen as opposed to dim would be nice.) But it deserves 4 stars for it's current offering.

For weeks though on my G4 Sawtooth, the energy saver settings were being ignored for whatever reason and my LCD displays - a 23" Cinema and a 15" LCD - would not dim, they'd stay on all night with just the screen saver. Trashing preferences and running utilities I could get the monitors to dim, but then my 23" Cinema would fail to turn back on when I got to the computer in the morning, forcing a reboot! Once rebooted, I had the same issue with the screens not sleeping.<BR><BR>So I saw this on Versiontracker a few days ago and decided I'd give it a shot. I step away from my computer for 5 minutes, and the screens turn off. I come back, they turn on. I only ran the program once, and the settings have even lasted through reboots (performed for software installs). I'm very happy to have this app, as it'll likely prolong the life of my Cinema display.
