...PowerPC only<br />This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.<br />Sheesh. Finally I thought it would be able to work on my Intel Mac after using version 3.55 for years. I got 6.08 from SNX support via email, but that is still PowerPC only (no Rosetta). After installing my Intel Mac, I finally needed to run Bar Code Pro on it. It told me I have to install from the original disks. OK, I *kept* the 6.08 installer and ran it. This version finally ran, but it's just as buggy as the earlier 6 version. I proceeded to "make" some barcodes in EPS format, similar to the hundreds we've done before. No errors reported, file seems to show up, OK let's keep going. Trouble was, the EPS files were completely EMPTY. Sheesh. OK, I want to try to make PDF files instead. Smaller, place better in Indesign, etc. So I took the barcode I still had open and saved it as a PDF format. Woops! "Font error" after "font error," one error dialog for *every* font of the 300 on my Mac! Sheesh #2Ã¢??302. However, the second time (I aborted it the first time, and it forgot everything it knew) I clicked through 300 times to see if it would work. It did, finally, and produced a PDF file that seemed fine. After I turned off all but the essential fonts, it worked without an error. Why in the Blue Blazes did it need to scour all my fonts, erroring with a garbled dialog box? P*ss-poor programming IMHO. I Tried to install the 6.11 upgrade from here, but it didn't work. Rather, the program now refuses to run and it tells me I need to install from the CD. Sheesh #303 I'll try to reinstall one more time, then a scathing email to the tech support people. I wouldn't otherwise bother but we sunk $500 into this turkey for 5 seats. And that's the upgrade price!

6.05 is no improvement over 3.55 from 1999!

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.<br />Yes, no improvement over version 3.55. Seriously, we are able to create the UCC/EAN 128 barcodes using Classic version 3.55 from 1999 (8 years ago). Version 3.55 can open the barcodes so we can check or edit the barcodes or create a similar one by changing the numbers and saving to a new file. Only problem with 3.55 was that it was Mac OS 9 Classic only. <p><p> As we were getting new Macs and Classic is not on shipping Macs, I thought it would be prudent to upgrade to 6.05 which was touted as working with Mac OS X. (Touted in dozens and dozens of marketing emails.) Well, it works in OS X only if you never need to review or edit your old ones. <p><p> I bought the 6.05 upgrade (for 5 users! $$$$$$) and I was able to open a barcode from 6.05 only by using the Open... dialog. Double-clicking or drag-and-drop didn't do anything. C'mon, these should have been solved issues, developers! <p><p> I was able to open 3.55 version barcodes (which is everything else we've done) on my old MAc, but the converter is Classic only. For Macs without Classic, they recommend printing out the barcode (not from version 6.05, obviously) and "measuring" the result! WTF!?!? <p><p> So you have to convert 3.55 to work with 6.05. However, the Convert... menu item is broken ("Converter not found"). And running the converter application (with a 5.0 icon, btw) requires Classic, not OS X native. When I complained on a support ticket about that, the tech support person wordlessly replied with a canned PDF saying that the OS X version will be coming out <em>"soon".</em> Which would be fine, except that the document was written <b>one year ago</b> (April 2005). I have no confidence that it will ever be done, I'm certainly not planning on it. <p><p> SNX seems to be a Windows shop, so I'm guessing they farmed out the OS X version but didn't bother paying for the converter utility. So basically it'll never get done now unless they lose business because of it. Or they can chalk up dropping Mac sales to fewer Mac users instead of to their clunky Windows conversions. <p><p> We've got hundreds of EPS files we've made using 3.55, and there's also no batch conversion ability (and the batch conversion re-saves over the existing file. Did you have a backup?) Oh, but OS X native converter is also coming "soon". That accounts for the poor "quality" score I give the program. <p><p> Tech Support also didn't answer my other question in the support ticket. Guess they're busy working on the converter to do anything but plop a PDF in a reply and send it without any human interaction. <p><p> Unless you are desperate, pick another bar code program, the support on this one is officially abysmal. <b>No 2D symbologies</b> either, so you can't use the wonderfully-compact Data Matrix or PDF417 symbologies.
