Backup Made Simple can make a traditional backup to almost any device, or synchronize folder contents with copies on another hard drive or across a network. The Backup Plan Wizard will help you identify what to save or synchronize, and then set up the program to do it. You can back up the entire computer, or whatever folders and files you wish. Your choices are saved as a Backup Plan, so you can make the same backup again whenever you like without designing it all over again. It is very similar to its cousin Backup To DVD/CD, and will also write DVD's and CD's, but is optimized for small capacity media by using compression. For added convenience Backup Made Simple will add new subfolders and files to your Backup Plan automatically, and it will even adapt automatically when you rename things. Without compromising ease of use, the software is also chock full of useful features like scheduling, and backup logging.

Uses 'unusual' sales tactics -- to put it politely

The GUI interface shown in screenshots sent to Tiny Hacker look great -- but that's not what I got with the download here.
Cons
I can't figure out how to use it No support during trial, perhaps not after either. A developer that distributes 'inaccurate' info about itself.
Summary
The first time I used this app, the developer pitched it as free. After 90 days, all I got was pop-ups asking me to pay for it. I deleted it. Recently I downloaded it again based on a post including great screenshots and a 'free' claim from TinyHacker. It still isn't free (at least CNET got this right), and the screenshots shown don't match the app in use. Also downloads the Ask toolbar without offering an opt out during installation. A company that can't be honest about how its app looks, downloads and costs -- then seeks out other sites to spread its misinformation -- is not one I want to deal with. Questions directed to the developer have gone unanswered.

It's very easy to use, you just select the files and put a dvd in the drive. There is no backup limit, if the files are too large to fit on 1 dvd, you just place another and it keeps on writing!

You can have some trouble with NERO.

I have a notoriously bad time with new software, but using this was all sweetness and light. The program has several ways to design a backup, i.e. decide what you want to save and then figure out where that stuff is on your hard drive, including a really slick "Backup Plan Wizard". And to cap an already positive experience, it burned a 2 disc backup without any hassles at all on a DVD burner that has been notorious for compatibility problems in the past. How do I know it burned the discs okay? Because the software has a "check backup" option that does sort of a "trial restore" to read the discs and make sure they are okay without actually restoring the data on them.

Pros
Setup is very straightforward: Telling it what to back up couldn't be easier, and then you just "go". Other features I find useful are "check backup", which lets me verify an old backup is still usable, and being able to back up only files I've changed since some date or since the last backup.

Very good at selecting folders and files to back up. Lets you pick with an Explorer-like interface, or use a Wizard to build a variety of different kinds of backups. I like the way it does backups of recently modified files. Very good help file. I've used successfully on 3 different DVD writers.

Won't work with a Nero burner. I have a new one with the lastest driver and software for it. Tried six different ways of burning a back-up and got an error writing to disk every time. I tried writing a folder to the disk. Nero had no problem writing the folder. So, it wasn't the disk. I have Win98SE. This program was exactly what I was looking for. Bummer!

Very easy to use, simple to work with. Has no problem at all with my CD rewriter. Only thing though: updating from version 4 to 5 costs another 20 dollars (after an initial payment of 19,95)

Summary
After looking at many programs to backup to CD-RW, I thought I had finally found it. This has all the features I want, it's easy to use, and very stable. There's just 1 problem... it keeps telling me my CD drive isn't ready. Considering that other programs have no problem with it, and I've got the latest driver loaded, I'm left with the conclusion there's a problem with the program. It really is a pity because I like this program.
