Linasoft's AutoPlay Menu Builder offers a simple method for building digital menus. Perfect for DVDs and CD-ROMs, its usefulness easily overcomes some minor design hurdles.

We headed straight for the Help file and its topic-by-topic instructions upon opening this program. The layout was a cluttered collection of separate command windows surrounding the main screen and didn't make sense at first, but these issues were quickly sorted out, improving navigation overall. AutoPlay wisely offers about seven different templates for making menus, ranging from DVDs to tutorials and software installations. There's also an option to build a menu from scratch, but this proved fairly difficult to lay out in a professional manner. We liked AutoPlay's drag-and-drop simplicity and the ability to type the proper information in the templates and set each menu button's functionality and color with an easy onscreen wizard. All of the templates produced a professional-looking screen that would be right at home with any piece of software. We felt the program's finest feature was its option to run a virtual test of your new menu to make sure everything is linked up perfectly.

While its interface was a little too busy for our tastes at first, AutoPlay Menu Builder proved to be worth our time, and we recommend it. We appreciated this program's usefulness, once we got over the initial screen shock. The free trial version downloads as a compressed file and opens with a nag screen. The full version costs $49.95. It's fully compatible with Windows 7.

Within an hour and a half of installing this software, I knew I'd found what I was looking for. <p> <p>All I was trying to do was create a CD I can give to my fellow engineers with all of the tools, utilities and fixes we need with a simple to navigate menu. <p> <p>Finding the software to do it has been a bit of a trek, but this one is a winner. The templates it comes with are a big help at the start and are actually quite good. You could do worse than just use those. I'd already made lots of cool jpg buttons for the menu and wanted to use those as my buttons. I'm happy to say I could do it and more. Not only that, you can create sub menus, rather like "pages" on your menu. Excellent for sub-categorising, and a cinch to setup. (Again, I used the example to figure out how it works). <p> <p>Refreshingly, I'd say the creators were being sympathetic to graphics peeps out there - as the whole thing feels a bit like a paint package. And this is by no means a bad thing. It's so dead easy to use! <p> <p>There's a lot of features I've not explored yet - embedded flash and media features to name a few. (Very easy to put a video into your menu!) <p> <p>Best of all, testing as you go is great, you just click the play button and off you go. <p> <p>It's all well put together - and full featured. The only drawback to the free version is a splash screen nagger when you play your creation.

Wish list more than anything else; but better control over graphics would be nice(i.e, controlling the transparency of images on screen). <p> <p>Oh, and font screening. The fonts used by the program have no dithering - making them appear a bit (and I do emphasise "a bit" jaggy. I can't see anywhere to adjust this. So it would be nice to fix. <p> <p>It's a very good product overall; conscience alone holds me back from giving it 5 stars... 4.9 maybe. ;-) <p> <p>Basically, if you want to make a menu for a CD or Data Drive - this is the one to use. (Ignore the monosyllabic responses saying it doesn't work, it does, and it does so very well.) Can't vouch for Windows 98 or Me, but I'm sure most people using this software are out of the stone-age.
