  This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.<br />I've been using ArtRage 1 for a few months as a light sketchpad. Sometimes Painter, Photoshop, ZBrush, et al are more than I need for the task at hand. ArtRage 1 was fast, straightforward and free. ArtRage 2 has 2 editions, free and paid. The free edition is essentially ArtRage 1 with bug fixes and miscellaneous improvements. The most important fix is the response time. ArtRage 1 would sometimes not pick up your strokes on a tablet right away; finally fixed. V2 is very responsive. Neither has ever crashed after hundreds of launches. The free version is great, and for those complaining about price and market differentiation for the full version: it's only $20! I'd say for a $20 app, it sure does plenty for the hobbyist, and for a pro like me, it's a great light app for getting ideas out of my head.

It has so many features of the bigger painting apps but is very friendly and great for anything from comps to watercolor to making scrapbook backgrounds. I've been using the full version and it's very responsive. Great job. And no, I'm in no way related! Would love a .pdf of the manual in addition to the html version. That would be a big plus.

  This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.<br />It's not that the app totally sucks but it's trying to be like Alias sketch-compare the interface; Painter; and a touch of interface cues from a few 3D apps I use. The refresh rate for the tools is very slow. I know for a fact that if you have to wait for the application to catch up to your mouse movements is a huge turn off. I don't see how a child would like that let alone someone with the attention span of a child who has the money to purchase this. See, the trick is to actually make whatever you release better or different from what already out there. If you do decide to cover ground that has already been covered and want to charge for it, IT HAD BETTER KICK SOME SERIOUS BANTHA DOO DOO! It may seem harsh but, I hope that this will make you push it further a challenge yourself. Making it look pretty with all that eye candy will not deguise crappy code. We see it all the time in movies that have excellent visuals but as far as content goes, they suck. Now, I will not say that this sucks but I will add that it's not all that great. No, this could not be used as a substitute for Corel Painter. Just because an app is made by a corporation who charges a nice chunk of change for it does not mean that it's a bad app. Don't see yourself short kids. Sometimes you do get what you pay for. Go for it. Try this out. Just don't let good reviews by the developer fool you into thinking that this is something it's not.

While you can use the mouse for some things, you really must have a graphics tablet to make effective use of it. Also, this is NOT a substitute for a typical draw or paint application, and you will be very diappointed if you want draw or paint features. ArtRage was created for a different purpose entirely.

  This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.<br />I tried this software on my dual G5 (1.8ghz) and the paint was unable to keep up with my mouse pointer and my Graphire pad. It's very pretty, but it's too slow to be of much use, and it's awfully limited with what it can do.

Your menu bar is gone. Click to get rid of the PayPal nag screen and you get yet another full-screen window, also with the menu bar obscured. This is bad design and rude behavior. It may be good as a paint app, but as a Mac app, it's an obnoxious intruder, violating every GUI guideline and common sense. I deleted it immediately.
