Arcadia: Guild of Heroes is the first title for Grey Dog by developer Derek DiBenedetto. In Arcadia, you enter world of swords and beasts, treasure and discovery, treachery and death as you become the leader and overlord to a band of adventurers, set on exploring distant lands and pilfering all the riches you can. This unique blend of RPG and career text strategy sim is the first of its kind.

Create your own party from randomly generated warriors every game, choosing between strength or luck, guile or agility, or just a plain nose for gold. These warriors are created in detail, with 8 different stats that impact gameplay, birthdays to height/weight and special abilities, to hidden strengths or weaknesses you'll find out as you play.

A unique story based system changes the game as you play, along with thousands of different treasures to find, a fully detailed and realistic aging algorhythm and injury/disease system is built into the game, forcing you to make choices as they age about who to keep around, and who you may need to give the axe to. Bargain and sign them to pacts while still keeping your Gold chest in the black.

A fun, detailed strategic fantasy RPG w/ resource mgmt.

Pros
- Nice interface with helpful instructions - There is definitely a sense of gathering a group to go adventuring, while stopping in to HQ to share tales and exploits - Varied stats uniquely represent the world's adventurers - Resource (people) management in deciding which leads to follow, and who should train for the season - Varied quest results (sometimes whisking away an adventurer who then becomes unavailable for a time, or having strange/horrifying battle effects) with treasure and XP - Branching path decisions on some quests - Random accomplishments possible while pursuing the adventuring lead (find something along the way, and so on)
Cons
- When coming in to quickly specify which heroes should train or quest, it was not readily apparent what the optimal choices should be. There might have been a quick view button, or a print-out or HTML output, or I could have written down the stats. Having a way to to specify training vs. questing while seeing all of the stats and statuses would be very useful. - I do enjoy when a strategic game lets you bypass the tactical combat if you want, and I often make use of such when I am sure of the heroes' capabilities, but I did not see the tactical combat available which is something I miss in either an RPG or Strategy game.
Summary
I found this to be enjoyable as a fantasy role-playing and resource-management strategic perspective. It captures elements very intriguing to me such as choosing which location for a hero to explore in the turn-based strategy game Age of Wonders: Shadow Magic.

Pros
- No serious bugs or bad programming. - Unique. - Addictive once you start a campaign. - Well written storylines and text fantasy. - Cool music and images. - A different and new game is generated every time you start a new profile.
Cons
Please note I just played the demo: - Doesn't seem like a modern PC game. Doesn't seem that much advanced than Derek's older games (from what I remember 7-10 years ago). In many ways it's just a spreadsheet. - No real end game, goals, combat system, quest, achievements, role playing, or anything you're used to. - Game abruptly closes when it's done. This seems to be the programmer's style based on his older games or maybe he can't program an adequate game ending screen. - Too random. Yes, there's such a thing as being too random in a text simulator.
Summary
This is not a standard RPG or adventure game. It's a macromanagement text simulator, so try the demo first to confirm it's your type of game. This game is technically overpriced. I can play deeper and more exciting traditional RPGs for free online (legally). I can even find free text simulators. At best it's a $3.99 game, but I can understand where if you played the demo you'd think it was free abandonedware from 2003. Unfortunately, this game can't compare to Greydog head honcho Adam Ryland's simulators which are actually programmed to include tons of features, options, real database storage, and tons of characters interacting with each other, not to mention professional text boxes and streamlined menus. 25 bucks?? Arcadia may have "potential" but for an experienced programmer like Derek he should have hit bulls-eye considering he has been working on Arcadia on and off for years. Feel free to challenge me on any of my comments and sell me on this game. I'm just being honest.<br /><br /><span class='notifyMsg'> Updated </span>on Nov 14, 2013<p/>After playing version 1.5, I have changed my tune completely. Derek came through with quests, monsters, prestige points, more choices, and some customization. Please ignore my negative comments.
