Ableton Live is a digital media workstation designed for electronic music production, audio editing, and live performance. You can combine a timeline-based arrangement with a flexible session view for real-time manipulation of loops and samples. The software features virtual instruments, MIDI sequencing, audio-to-MIDI conversion, and built-in effects, supporting both production and performance workflows. Features like warping, automation, and multitrack recording enable structured editing.

Ableton Live enhances its capabilities with Max for Live, letting you create custom devices for deeper personalization. The software consistently receives updates, adding new packs, devices, and workflow improvements. It offers extensive customization and precise sound design.

Enhance your music workflow

Ableton Live has two primary views, Arrangement View and Session View. Arrangement View is a linear timeline for track-based editing, ideal for structured composition. Session View enables launching clips, ideal for loop-based production and live sets. Both views support drag-and-drop functionality, automation lanes, and MIDI editing. You can switch between views without interruption, allowing for simultaneous composition and live triggering without needing separate sessions or rendering transitions manually.

It includes MIDI and audio devices such as Drum Rack, Simpler, Wavetable, and Operator. These tools allow sound synthesis, sampling, and modulation. Each device supports modulation routing, macro assignments, and internal processing chains. Audio effects include equalization, compression, delays, filters, and modulation processors. All devices can be placed in chains, grouped, or layered. MIDI effects include arpeggiators, chord generators, and scale filters. However, it has limited video and post-production features.

Max for Live is a modular programming environment for building custom instruments, audio effects, and utilities. You can extend functionality with custom tools or by downloading user-created devices via Max. These devices can access the API, controlling clip launching, automation, or interface behavior, with updates often expanding these capabilities. Additional features include audio warping, groove extraction, Push hardware support, and multitrack recording with punch-in/punch-out.
