Another entry in the good old breakout genre, PowBall Deluxe is predictable fun, but it's prone to rendering issues. The idea is to hit the ball to break bricks and collect power-ups. Though the graphics are suitably slick, they are not stunning, and the black background struck us as a bit gloomy. During testing, we had trouble getting the game window to behave. In the window mode it was too small, and in the full-screen mode the game was doubled. The controls are configurable in terms of assigning custom keys and adjusting sensitivity. In addition to other restrictions, the trial version doesn't allow level editing. Retro addicts may find an afternoon's distraction here.

Set in the 25th century out in the cold depths of space this game challenges you with 100 levels in the classic style of the Breakout and Arkanoid games but with much more than the original offers. You'll find this incarnation to have much better playability, action, strategy, sound and graphics than any other. The basic idea is to hit a ball with your paddle and knock away bricks until the screen is cleared, keeping at least one ball on screen.
