Not just a programmer's editor, ME is how I organize my life
autocoder
Pros
I was a programmer for some 35 years and ME was my one indispensable tool for the last dozen of those. Now I have moved on to family history research, and if anything, the program has become even more valuable. Why? Well for one thing, as "tubanose" has noted, ME is 100% customizable. It's functionality is also indefinitely extensible.
<p>
<p>ME has hundreds of built-in editor-type functions - richer than any word processor (except, of course, for graphics handling and typesetting) - and any of them are mappable to any key or combination of keys. You want to map "remember current cursor position as bookmark 3" ("Set Random Access Mark 3" in ME parlance) to ALT-SHIFT-F3, no prob. You can customize ME to emulate any editor or wordprocessor you are used to and that's just the beginning. Besides these built-in functions, there are hundreds of others accessible via an open-ended macro programming language. Regular expression search & replace is available either at the command level, or at the macro level. You can thus roll your own macros and extend the functionality of ME indefinitely. For example, I have one called "striphtml", assigned to a particular key combination, which translates all those funny-looking extended Ascii HTML codes which result from saving HTML to .txt format, into straight simple Ascii equivalents. You can thus build custom macros to do just about any kind of file format transformation.
<p>
<p>Even more valuable is ME's organizational ability. Over the years I have accumulated hundreds of projects, and for each, I have a corresponding named ME project. Any time I want to go back to, say, a project I worked on ten years ago, maybe something I barely remember, I can do that with two mouse-clicks, thereby opening up, say, the 20 or so files I was last working on, with the cursor in the exact same position in each file as when I last worked on this project. Talk about a memory boost!
Cons
As an organizational tool, ME might be of use to anyone, however (HOWEVER) the documentation (online and otherwise) leaves a lot to be desired, and the learning curve is steep. In fact the docs are so bad, that most of the 35 or so programming languages I have worked in, took less time and aggravation to master than the ME CMAC language (which, indeed, I have not mastered). Only very recently has there even been a CMAC manual per se, and it is pretty much a joke in my opinion. Anyone who has learned to use a spreadsheet, or a data base product, can learn the basic functionality of ME, but if you want to exploit its full functionality, you'ld better be an experienced programmer, and have a lot of patience to boot!

This is a great editer for programming
javaman97
Pros
Keyword hilighting, brace and bracket matching, searching and hilighting using literals or regular expressions, many languages supported (can add your own too).
Cons
Some options are a little more hidden that I'd like, but once you learn where/what options are it's great.
Summary
I spend 90% of my day editing code, and I can't live without this product
tubanose
Pros
1) It is 100% configurable. If you know what it's like to be able to 'program' your text editor to do your work for you, then you'll love what you can do with this.
<p>
<p>2) I've been using ths product for the last ten years and it just keeps getting better and better.
<p>
<p>3) It supports about 50 different programming languages and you can add your own with very little effort.
<p>
<p>4) You can launch any compiler you want directly from this product.
<p>
<p>5) Language 'bracket' matching. This product will let you match BEGIN and END syntax in SQL! Of course, it does brackets, curly braces, etc.
<p>
<p>6) v10 has Beyond Compare bundled right inside it. I personally like the integrated compare that's been there for the least ten years... so you have two great choices right at your fingertips.
<p>
<p>7) Runs on Linux inside Crossover Office!
<p>
<p>8) Absolutely love it!
Cons
1) doesn't do Unicode
<p>2) doesn't do visual word wrap (only cr/lf wrap)

Multi-Edit is a great php editor
axonware.ie
Pros
If you're working with PHP (say OScommerce) - Multi-Edit is the ONLY editor you should us. Check out header.php you'll see the layout is superb.
Cons
There is so much packed into this powerful programmers editor - that it takes a while to get to grips with all the functionality inside.
Summary
Easy, flexible, powerfull and logical
skylogic
Pros
I like the possibility to enter new highlighted keywords for any type of extention. I used nedit, emac, vim, ultra-edit, ..., but non of these tools are so powerfull and easy to handle as the multi-edit. I recommend the tool by our customers.
Cons
It's not easy to transfer the DBase of all types of extentions (with keywords and settings) to an other person. When we design a new type of language and provide a color highlighting, it's not easy to just go with a file to our customers and install it with them.

Pros
This is my favourite and main editor since 1990.
Cons
Problem with disappearing russian letter with code 0xFF (Win1251) pain me and all russian users.

Since 1993, this is the ONLY text/programming editor I insist on
nerib
Pros
Multi-Edit is aptly named, I can open 1 file or 100 files. They can be ANY size. For analyzing Logs with the Collapse feature or writing code with custom formatting or on-the-fly keyboard macros, you can't beat it.
Cons
It's hard to find things not to like about Multi-Edit. The auto completing feature for language elements of a particular programming language can take some getting used to, and you're likely to be surprised at times until you get the hang of it.
Summary
Solid editor and excellent support
SansHobo
Pros
I do 90% of my code writing within MEW. The usability is excellent and I am always find new abilities with it. The user support forums are good and response is fast. They do listen to the user.
Cons
I work with very large files (record lengths of 16k+) or file sizes exceeding 4 GB's. MEW cannot handle this size. Solve these problems and I have nothing to complain about!
