Instant File Name Search

This simple and free utility improves upon Windows' built-in file-search functions by offering faster results, but it doesn't live up to all its promises. Upon launch, Instant File Name Search scans your computer for all files to facilitate lightning-quick searches. The rather bland-looking interface has few buttons and boxes, so most users will get oriented in no time. The program locates files and folders by a keyword or a filter, but it can't search within files for certain words or phrases. Instant File Name Search includes a feature called Power Search for quickly finding specific programs, but in our tests, clicking its icon simply closed the application. Also, although the software claims it can search for files over a LAN, we never managed to successfully do so. Still, since it doesn't cost a dime, we can recommend the program to those persons seeking an alternative way to track down files on their local PCs.
