  Pros

  The software is great! I've had to restore from backups several times, and while it is never pleasant, I could do so successfully.

  Cons

  Roxio doesn't support Blu-Ray drives, although the included help shows that they are supported. It is also hard to contact Roxio support, but the support has been good after I finally got in contact with them.

  Summary

  I bought Acronis, but after upgrading to the 2011 version, I deleted it due to crappy display of existing backup info. Retrospect remains the software I use every few days to update my backups to multiple partitions on multiple removable SATA drives. Roxio acquired the software from EMC who got it from the original producer, who's name I forgot.

• Erases Previous Retrospect and Does Not Replace

  Pros

  None - Stay with earlier versions.

  Cons

  Not a free trial. Requires password to use and hit purchase. Installation removes previously bought 7.6 and does not replace when removed.

  Summary

  Poor customer service. Website has endless phone numbers that lead to additional phone numbers. Inquiry acknowledged by automated tracker but no personal response. Too many companies have purchased this software and eradicated support.

• Awful unreliable software with indifferent tech support

  Pros

  NONE! There is nothing good about backup software that destroys your backup sets every other month.

  Cons

  Destroys your backup sets every other month! Tech support tells you theres no way to recover any data and to start over again, your huge data loss issue is never escalated, the company actually dosen't care that their software destroys data.

  Summary

  We have used EMC Retrospect for about a year, having switched from Backup Exec to save some money. I have regretted the decision ever since. So far, Retrospect has literally destroyed its backup sets not once, but FOUR times. I have contacted their technical support and was actually told that yes, Retrospect "randomly corrupts its backup sets" and catalogs. I tell you, honestly, I was actually given no other option than to blow away and redo my backup sets each time and was advised by another technician to "create a backup backup set" of the original, because the total destruction of backup sets is a known issue with EMC Retrospect. DO NOT purchase this software if, like me, your career depends on keeping your companies' data backed up. I will be moving back to Backup Exec, regardless of cost, and will never look back.

• Cleaner looking, faster crashing than the last version

  Pros

  See my comments about 6.5 - unlike many disasters looking for a place to happen, this disaster found its place and crashed right into Retrospect. The windows that lead no where are prettier than they were last time.

  Cons

  6.5 was arcane ... but 7.5 hides the stuff you could find in 6.5. I guess if anyone wrote in to complain about a 'feature', EMC just hid it so there would be no more complaints. I wouldn't buy this 'software' if I needed the packaging to scribble a note to my cell mate on.

  Pros

  Logical setup and administration. Good scheduling and maintenance options.

  Cons

  No response from either European or US support, I purcahsed an upgrade from an OEM 6 version to 7.5 professional and lost the ability to use the proactive backup feature, the new version does not see my old or new DVD. It no longer creates bootable rescue CD/DVD's Word all over the net is that EMC have stopped supporting it and laid off all the staff. Certainly I got the impression that this is the last version left to decay whilst the staff flee.
